Manley Lanier " Sonny " Carter, Jr. ( August 15, 1947 – April 5, 1991 ) was an American physician, professional soccer player, United States Navy officer, and NASA astronaut who flew on STS-33.

Sonny Carter was born in Macon, Georgia, but considered Warner Robins, Georgia, to be his hometown.

After his death, his name was given to the Sonny Carter Training Facility Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, NASA's underwater astronaut training facility, for which he had developed training techniques.

The university holds The Sonny Carter Invitational each year in his honor.

JSC handles most of the planning and training of the US astronaut corps and houses training facilities such as the Sonny Carter Training Facility and the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, a critical component in training astronauts for spacewalks.

EVA training is conducted at the Sonny Carter Training Facility.

On April 5, 1991, Tower and his daughter Marian and the astronaut Sonny Carter were killed along with twenty other people in the crash of Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 2311 on approach for landing at Brunswick, Georgia.

The albums ( with Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums ) revisited the tenor trio form used by Sonny Rollins in 1957 on his own live Vanguard albums for the same label.

Sonny Carter, a Mission Specialist on this flight, was killed in a commercial plane crash on 5 April 1991 while training to fly on STS-42.
