Originally drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith for Conan the Barbarian, Sonja was transposed from a minor Robert E. Howard 16th-century gunslinger character (" Red Sonya ") to a mainstay of the sword and sorcery Conan canon by Roy Thomas.

His daughter Rivka died of croup ; Sonya died of an infection contracted while giving birth to their son Abram ; meanwhile, he had been carrying on an affair with a young woman, Jenny (" Jennya ") Kaiser, who was also pregnant, with his son Charles.

1999, 197, 216 Sonya, too, died in London, from an infection contracted while giving birth to her second child, Abram (" Abe ") Adler, in 1886.

Adler wrote in his memoir that the passion of his future wife Sonya Oberlander ( and of her family ) for theater, and their vision of what Yiddish theater could become, kept him in the profession despite his uncle's view.

Sonya returned to Odessa to give birth to their daughter Rivka ; Adler stayed on six weeks in Zhytomyr and had sort of a belated apprenticeship with two Russian character actors of national fame, Borisov and Philipovsky.

While still married to Sonya, he began an affair with Jenny " Jennya " Kaiser, with whom he had a son, stage actor Charles Adler, born 1886.

The Grodners were briefly in a London troupe with Jacob and Sonya Adler at London's Prescott Street Club, at the first performance of which they played the leads in Der Bel Tchuve ( The Penitent ) by N. M. Sheikevitch ; he also played the mischievous Tzingatan in a production of Goldfaden's Shulamith.

After several more successes in Odessa, most notably a production of Breindele Cossack starring Jacob Adler and Sonya Oberlander ( then performing under the name Sonya Michelson ), their run was cut short by the news that Goldfaden, whose plays they were using without permission, was coming with his troupe to Odessa, and that he had booked the Remesleni Club out from under them.

Goldfaden was making impossible demands for royalties ; at one point Sonya Adler gave him nearly all of her jewelry to placate him ; shortly after, in late 1880, Goldfaden briefly recruited the Adlers away from Rosenberg, but he treated them so badly that they ended up suing him for their wages and rejoining Rosenberg in Nezhin, where his troupe was performing in a tent theater.

Rosenberg translated ; with Spivakovsky having ducked out only three days before opening, Adler played the title role ; Liptzin played Uriel's mother ; Sonya Adler played Judith.
