In a pairing of great political significance, Chiang was Sun's brother-in-law: he had married Soong May-ling, the younger sister of Soong Ching-ling, Sun's widow, on December 1, 1927.

During and after World War II, Chiang and his American-educated wife Soong May-ling, known in the United States as " Madame Chiang ", held the support of the United States ' China Lobby, which saw in them the hope of a Christian and democratic China.

Kung's wife was Soong Ai-ling, the sister of Soong May-ling who was Ching-kuo's stepmother.

Soong May-ling met Chiang Kai-shek in 1920.

In 1931, Soong May-ling had a villa built for her on the east side of Nanjing.

Though Soong May-ling initially avoided the public eye after marrying Chiang, she soon began an ambitious social welfare project to establish schools for the orphans of Nationalist soldiers.

Soong May-ling was deeply involved in the project and even picked all of the teachers herself.

According to recollections by publisher Gardner Cowles, Willkie's visit to China involved an episode where Soong May-ling seduced Willkie and took him to one of her hideaway apartments in Chungking.

Soong May-ling wasn ’ t deterred for long, making it to the United States the next year.

Soong May-ling made several tours to the United States to lobby support for the Nationalist's war effort.

In the 1930s, Soong Ai-ling and her sister Mei-ling were the two richest women in China at the time.

This marriage made Kung the brother-in-law of Soong Mei-ling, the wife of Chiang Kai-shek.

An instrumental figure behind the so-called " China Lobby ", he played a large role in steering American foreign policy and popular sentiment in favor of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling in their war against the Japanese.

Though he tended not to advertise it, Cheng served as one of the painting teachers of Soong Mei-ling, Madame Chiang Kai-shek, whom he taught to paint lotuses ; and as personal physician to Chiang Kai-shek in Taiwan and perhaps earlier.

Some of the bureaucratic social groups he was with included Chiang Kai-shek's wife Soong Mei-ling and her sister Ai-ling, who were regulars at the Canidrome.

The university has also educated 26 foreign Heads of State, including President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, President of East Timor Jose Ramos Horta, President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves and other historical figures such as Wellington Koo, Gaston Eyskens, and T. V. Soong.

The fourth season saw Brent Spiner ( Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation ) as the imprisoned scientist Dr. Arik Soong, an ancestor of Data's creator ( Dr. Noonien Soong, also played by Spiner in at least two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation ), in a three-episode arc at the end of which Soong abandons the concept of improving mankind in favor of creating artificial intelligence: an allusion to what will eventually become Data.

This goal eventually led to the addition of an " emotion chip ", also created by Soong, to Data's positronic net.

Spiner also portrayed Data's manipulative and malignant brother Lore ( a role he found much easier to play, because the character was " more like me "), and Data's creator, Dr. Noonien Soong.

In " Brothers ", Data reunites with Dr. Soong ( also portrayed by Spiner ).

Later on, his " mother " is revealed also to be his positronic sister as the real Julianna Soong died and was replaced with an identical Soong Type android, the most advanced one that Dr. Soong was known to have built.

Although President Chen at one point supported the trips of Lien and Soong for defusing cross-strait tensions., he also attacked them for working with the " enemy " PRC.

In 2004 Spiner returned to Star Trek when he appeared as Dr. Arik Soong, an ancestor of Data's creator Dr. Noonien Soong, whom he also played, in a three-episode story arc of Star Trek: Enterprise: " Borderland ", " Cold Station 12 ", and " The Augments ".

" He also made a veiled criticism of Soong May-ling ( with whom he was unrelated ), implying that she had returned to Taiwan after her stepson's death to try to reassume power.

Soong established himself as one of the few mainlanders who were also loyal to Lee.

Claiming that his remarks were based on " intelligence ," Chen also said Soong promised during the meeting to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow for popular referendums on future constitutional amendments, in exchange for Beijing's approval for Soong to visit China.

Soong Ching-ling ( 27 January 1893 – 29 May 1981 ), also known as Madame Sun Yat-sen, was one of the three Soong sisters — who, along with their husbands, were amongst China's most significant political figures of the early 20th century.

There are also a few modular designs in the Chinese paperfolding tradition, notably the Pagoda ( from Maying Soong ) and the Lotus made from Joss paper.

It is transliterated as Sung in Wade-Giles, and Soong is also a common transliteration.

A less common Chinese family name ( 崇 pinyin Chóng ) can also be transliterated to Soong in some Chinese dialects.

For example, the Taiwanese politician Soong Chu-yu is also known as " James Soong ".

Although several androids, robots and artificial intelligences were seen in the original Star Trek series, Data was often referred to as being unique in the universe as being the only sentient android known to exist ( save the other androids created by Soong ).

Soong is well known for using his body language, publicly kneeling and shedding tears, as a gesture to plead for constituency support.

Soong May-ling, or " Madame Chiang " as she was known to Americans, was in charge of the Aeronautical Commission and thus became Chennault's immediate supervisor.
