Matthew David " Matt " Cameron ( born November 28, 1962 ) is an American musician who serves as the drummer for the American rock bands Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

After getting his start with the Seattle, Washington-based rock bands Bam Bam and Skin Yard, he first gained fame as the drummer for the grunge rock band Soundgarden, which he joined in 1986 and remained in until the band's break-up in 1997, triggered by creative friction.

By September 1986, Cameron had gained so much notoriety in the local music scene that he was chosen to play for Soundgarden, replacing drummer Scott Sundquist.

Even after becoming a full-time member of Pearl Jam upon drummer Jack Irons ' departure for health reasons, Cameron's cymbal setup has not changed radically from his Soundgarden days.

Cameron formed Hater in 1993 with Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd.

Cameron used California-based Drum Workshop drums during the majority of his time with Soundgarden.

They were also an important influence on the development of alternative rock, as bands adapted elements from the " Zeppelin sound " of the mid-1970s, including The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

The influence of Led Zeppelin is also evident, particularly in the work of Soundgarden, whom Q magazine noted were " in thrall to ' 70s rock, but contemptuous of the genre's overt sexism and machismo.

Soundgarden and other early grunge bands were influenced by British post-punk bands such as Gang of Four and Bauhaus, which were popular in the early 1980s Seattle scene.

While music writer Michael Azerrad acknowledged that early grunge bands like Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and Tad had disparate sounds, he noted " to the objective observer, there were some distinct similarities.

Soundgarden's album Badmotorfinger and Alice in Chains ' Dirt, along with the Temple of the Dog album collaboration featuring members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, were also among the 100 top selling albums of 1992.

Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins noted the band's importance in the early 2010s, saying " If you look at the popular bands of our generation, like Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Hole, Nirvana and others, you see now clearly that the bands were very influential, very important not only for music but for culture, fashion …"

In the time since the album's release, the band reformed for short live performances on four occasions where both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were performing.

Also drawing on the punk rock scene were The Melvins, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Fitz of Depression of Olympia.

Along with Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana, Screaming Trees were part of Seattle's emerging grunge scene in the early 1990s.

Although the Screaming Trees were viewed as one of the finest bands on the Seattle scene, they never drew the commercial attention that Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden had garnered.

The three were joined by Tad Doyle of fellow 1990s Seattle band TAD, and performed three Soundgarden songs.

Held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre Mountain View and the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa on October 6 and 7th 1990, the artists featured were Soundgarden, Ice-T, Indigo Girls, Queen Latifah, Joan Baez, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, The Charlatans UK, The Cramps, The Mission U. k. and Public Enemy.
