All but five species of monitor lizard are classified by CITES ( the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ) under Appendix II, which is loosely defined as species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction, but may become so unless trade in such species is subject to strict regulation in order to avoid utilization incompatible with the survival of the species in the wild.

The Barbados Golden Warbler ( D. p. petechia ) is listed as " Endangered Foreign Wildlife " by the United States ' Endangered Species Act ( ESA ) since 1970 ; other than for scientific, educational or conservation purposes ( for which a permit may be available ) importing it into the USA is illegal.

The goal of the recovery program is to conserve and recover the species to the extent that it may be down-listed from endangered to threatened in the near future, and ultimately, that the population be healthy enough to no longer require federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
