Here appears what seems to be the absolutely earliest praise of Shakespeare in a piece entitled A Remembrance of some English Poets, in which the still unrecognized author of Venus and Adonis is celebrated by the side of Spenser, Daniel and Drayton.

On the death of Edmund Spenser, in the same year, Daniel received the somewhat vague office of Poet Laureate, which he seems, however to have shortly resigned in favour of Ben Jonson.

If Lodge, as has been supposed, was the Alcon in Colin Clout's Come Home Again, it may have been the influence of Edmund Spenser which led to the composition of Phillis, a volume of sonnets, in which the voice of nature seems only now and then to become audible, published with the narrative poem, The Complaynte of Elsired, in 1593.

The tract was dedicated to Sir Philip Sidney, who seems not unnaturally to have resented being connected with a pamphlet which opened with a comprehensive denunciation of poets, for Spenser, writing to Gabriel Harvey ( 16 October 1579 ) of the dedication, says the author " was for hys labor scorned.

Hardnose Lt. Quirk seems to view him as a necessary evil while Sgt Belson ( portrayed as a bit of a slob ) takes Spenser as he comes.

As Feeley notes, " The idea of fairies forming a hidden supernatural aristocracy certainly predates Spenser and Shakespeare, and seems to distinguish the English tales of wee folk from those of Scotland and Ireland.

He was included in some contemporary lists of leading poets, but he seems to have lacked the stature of the aristocratic Philip Sidney, who became a cult figure due to his death in battle at a young age, or of Edmund Spenser.

Spenser was a former State trooper assigned to the Suffolk County DA's Office ( although some novels state that he also worked out of the Middlesex County DA's Office, for example in Walking Shadow and the pilot episode of Spenser: For Hire said he was a Boston Police detective ), and regularly seeks help from ( or sometimes butts heads with ) Martin Quirk ( originally a lieutenant, later a captain ) of the Boston Police Department.

In 2010 Spenser replaces the Browning with a Smith and Wesson. 40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Beginning in 1999, Joe Mantegna played Spenser in three TV movies on the A & E cable network: Small Vices ( 1999 ), Thin Air ( 2000 ), Walking Shadow ( 2001 ), with Marcia Gay Harden as Susan and Shiek Mahmud-Bey and later Ernie Hudson as Hawk.

Spenser and Hawk live in the same Boston literary universe as Parker's other, newer series characters: private investigator Sunny Randall and small town police chief Jesse Stone, the former of whom was possibly mentioned in passing as a blonde jogging with an English bull terrier ( named Rosie in the Randall novels ) while the latter had a much larger role in Back Story.

Many years after Leicester's death Spenser wistfully recalled this time in his Prothalamion, and in 1591 he remembered the late Earl with his poem The Ruins of Time.

English readers were familiar with Mother Hubbard, already a stock figure when Edmund Spenser published his satire " Mother Hubbard's tale ", 1590 ; with the superstitious advice on getting a husband or a wife of " Mother Bunch ", who was credited with the fairy stories of Madame d ' Aulnoy when they first appeared in English.

By the time of Elizabethan literature a vigorous literary culture in both drama and poetry established authors such as Thomas Wyatt, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare initiating the storied history of English Renaissance theatre.
