Shrinking demand and tough competition started a shakeout in the market in the early 1970s — RCA sold out to UNIVAC and GE also left ; in the 1980s Honeywell was bought out by Bull ; UNIVAC became a division of Sperry, which later merged with Burroughs to form Unisys Corporation in 1986.

In 1939 the United States government bought a large tract between Marcus Avenue, Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike, to be the home to the Sperry Gyroscope Company which built a variety of maritime, military, aerospace and navigation products.

The estate was later bought by the Sperry Rand Corporation, and it was on these grounds that the corporation developed the first business computer, known as the UNIVAC.

In 1986, Ford expanded its tractor business when it purchased the Sperry-New Holland skid-steer loader and hay baler, hay tools and implement company from Sperry Corporation and formed Ford-New Holland which bought out Versatile tractors in 1988.

In December 1996 the US corporation Litton Industries bought Racal-Decca Marine, as well as Sperry Marine and C. Plath, in order to strengthen their marine electronics position under the Litton Marine Systems name.

In his Nobel-winning work, Sperry and Gazzaniga tested four out of ten patients who had undergone an operation developed in 1940 by William Van Wagenen, a neurosurgeon in Rochester, NY.

After setting up eight companies and taking out over 400 patents, Sperry died in Brooklyn on 16 June 1930.

The principal trade creditors were: Blackburn Aircraft Ltd., De La Rue Extrusions Ltd., Smiths Aircraft Instruments Ltd. and the Sperry Gyroscope Co. Ltd. Mr. F. G. Miles announced the payment of the 4 % per cent preference dividends out of his own resources of £ 8, 600.

During a coordinated raid on the union mess hall at the corner of Steuart and Mission San Francisco Police shot and killed Howard Sperry, a striking sailor, and Nick Counderakis ( AKA Nick Bordoise ), member of the cook's union and a strike sympathizer helping out at the mess hall.

" During production, he found out that Cryo rushed to finish their game first, leading to Virgin publishing their game as Dune and Westwood's game as Dune II, despite Sperry protesting against this decision.

After RCA decided to get out of the computer business due to stunning losses, it sold most of its computer and peripheral lines to Sperry ; a few were sold to Singer Corporation.

The latter architecture has continued to evolve into their current zSeries mainframes which, along with the then Burroughs and Sperry ( now Unisys ) MCP-based and OS1100 mainframes, are among the few mainframe architectures still extant that can trace their roots to this early period.

Elmer Sperry Jr., the son of Lawrence Sperry, and Capt Shiras continued work after the war on the auto-pilot developed by Elmer Sperry's father, and in 1930 test a more compact and reliable auto-pilot which kept a US Army Air Corps aircraft on a true heading and altitude for three hours, that was probably of the type used by Wiley Post to fly alone around the world in less than eight days in 1933.

The six computer manufacturers were Burroughs Corporation, IBM, Minneapolis-Honeywell ( Honeywell Labs ), RCA, Sperry Rand, and Sylvania Electric Products.

RCA was one of several major computer companies ( see also: Computing ) that also included IBM, Digital Equipment Corporation, Burroughs, Control Data Corporation, General Electric, Honeywell, NCR and Sperry Rand through most of the 1960s.

Sperry Rand officially took over the RCA base in January 1972.

RCA originally called this operating system Time Sharing Operating System ( TSOS ), running on RCA's Spectra 70 line of virtual memory systems and changed its name to VMOS before the Sperry acquisition of RCA CSD.

The Sperry section of Litton Marine Systems, based in Charlottesville, Virginia, was already producing its own line of marine radars, the Rascar, at the time of the acquisition but this was replaced by the BridgeMaster E. The Rascar had been the American-made radar of choice in the American Navy and Coast Guard but eventually the BridgeMaster E made inroads there as well.

For a variety of reasons ( including Mauchly's June 1941 examination of the Atanasoff – Berry Computer, prototyped in 1939 by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry ), US patent 3, 120, 606 for ENIAC, granted in 1964, was voided by the 1973 decision of the landmark federal court case Honeywell v. Sperry Rand, putting the invention of the electronic digital computer in the public domain and providing legal recognition to Atanasoff as the inventor of the first electronic digital computer.

Between 1954 and 1973, Atanasoff was a witness in the legal actions brought by various parties to invalidate electronic computing patents issued to John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, which were owned by computer manufacturer Sperry Rand.

In the 1973 decision of Honeywell v. Sperry Rand, a federal judge named Atanasoff the inventor of the electronic digital computer.

In the 1970s, Sperry Corporation was an old-school conglomerate headquartered in the Sperry Rand Building at 1290 Avenue of Americas in Manhattan, selling typewriters ( Sperry Remington ), office equipment, electronic digital computers for business and the military ( Sperry Univac ), farm equipment ( Sperry New Holland ), avionics ( e. g. gyroscopes, radars, Air Route Traffic Control equipment ) ( Sperry Vickers / Sperry Flight Systems ), and consumer products ( electric razors ) ( Sperry Remington.

With the computer industry more than 30 years old in the 1970s, the history of computing had become a hot topic with the revelation of the Colossi in England — electronic digital computers that predated the ENIAC in the United States — and the controversy spawned by the Honeywell v. Sperry Rand decision, which invalidated the ENIAC patent.

Atansoff invented the first digital computer in the world during the 1930s in the Iowa State College, but it took a lengthy court battle for achieving legal patent to 1973 when the case of Honeywell v. Sperry Rand was solved and the verdict named Atansoff with the title the inventor of the computer, the decision was never appealed, thus giving him the legal right to be called as such in the United States.

In 1978 Sperry Rand, an old fashioned conglomerate of disharmonious divisions ( computers, typewriters, office furniture, hay balers, manure spreaders, gyroscopes, avionics, radar, electric razors ), decided to concentrate on its computing interests and unrelated divisions were sold.

FASTRAND was a magnetic drum mass storage system built by Sperry Rand Corporation for their UNIVAC 1100 series and 490 / 494 series computers.

The UNIVAC 1107 was the first member of Sperry Rand's UNIVAC 1100 series of computers, introduced in October 1962.

The UNIVAC 1110 was the fourth member of Sperry Rand's UNIVAC 1100 series of computers, introduced in 1972.

The Univac 90 / 60 series computer was a mainframe class computer manufactured by Sperry Corporation as a competitor to the IBM System 360 series of mainframe computers.

He later relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where he partnered with James Bosley Noel Wyatt to form the architectural firm Wyatt and Sperry.

Many terminal emulators have been developed for terminals such as VT100, VT220, VT320, IBM 3270 / 8 / 9 / E, IBM 5250, IBM 3179G, Data General D211, Hewlett Packard HP700 / 92, Sperry / Unisys 2000-series UTS60, Burroughs / Unisys A-series T27 / TD830 / ET1100, ADDS ViewPoint, Sun console, QNX, AT386, SCO-ANSI, SNI 97801, Televideo, and Wyse 50 / 60.

The Sperry PC / IT, an IBM PC AT clone, was advertised as capable of supporting eight simultaneous dumb terminal users under this version.

Atanasoff agreed to assist the attorney, but IBM ultimately entered a patent-sharing agreement with Sperry Rand, the owners of the Eckert-Mauchly memory patent, and the case was dropped.

Since the 1986 marriage of Burroughs and Sperry, Unisys has metamorphosed from a computer manufacturer to a computer services and outsourcing firm, competing in the same marketplace as IBM, Electronic Data Systems ( EDS ), and Computer Sciences Corporation.

The Sperry UNIVAC System 80 series: The entire 90 / xx series was eventually replaced in 1981 by the System 80, a Sperry-badged, IBM / 360-like mainframe actually developed and engineered by Mitsubishi in Japan.

The UNIVAC Solid State was a magnetic drum-based solid-state computer announced by Sperry Rand in December 1958 as a response to the IBM 650.

Seymour Cray was likewise chosen to be the chief designer, but he was still in the process of completing an early version of the 1103-based Naval Tactical Data System ( NTDS ), and he did not leave Sperry to join CDC until it was complete.

* The UNIVAC 90 / 30 Series ( 90 / 30, 90 / 25, 90 / 40 ): Separately from the 90 / 60 series, Sperry Univac introduced the Univac 90 / 30 in about 1975 to provide an upgrade path for 9x00 users and to compete with IBM's System 3.

The AN / USQ-17 or Naval Tactical Data System ( NTDS ) computer referred to in Sperry Rand documents as the Univac M-460, was Seymour Cray's last design for UNIVAC.
