Lorne and Gunn take the news angrily, but Spike tells them that Drogyn cannot speak lies.

In a demonic voice, he berates Buffy for her involvement with Spike.

In the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike refers to a scythe as the Holy Hand Grenade

Over time, Spike falls in love with Buffy, and he briefly becomes Buffy's lover in Season Six.

Spike later went off on his own, inherited a ship full of giant insects and reunited with Buffy.

In the show's second season ( 1997 – 1998 ), Buffy continues to come to terms with her destiny, finds forbidden love with benevolent vampire Angel ( David Boreanaz ), and clashes with new villains Spike ( James Marsters ) and Drusilla ( Juliet Landau ).

Buffy suffers emotional turmoil throughout this season, including the realization Dawn is not actually her sister, the deterioration of her relationship with Riley, the discovery that Spike has become obsessed with her, and her mother's death from a brain aneurysm.

Spike also leaves San Francisco after it becomes difficult for him to be around Buffy anymore.

Spike, played by James Marsters, is a fictional character created by Joss Whedon for the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

The character had intended to be a brief villain, with Whedon originally adamant to not have another major " romantic vampire " character like Angel-Marsters says " Spike was supposed to be dirty and evil, punk rock, and then dead "-but the character ended up staying for the second season, and then returning in the fourth to replace Cordelia as " the character who told Buffy she was stupid and about to die ".

During the second season of the series Spike comes to Sunnydale hoping to kill a third Slayer, Buffy Summers ( Sarah Michelle Gellar ), with whom he later forges an uneasy alliance.

Over the course of Buffy, Spike falls in love with the Slayer, acquires a soul to prove himself to her, and dies a hero in the Buffy series finale before being resurrected in the fifth season of spin-off series Angel.

Considered a ' breakout character ', Spike proved immensely popular with fans of Buffy.

Canonically, the character appears in issues of the comic books Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight and Angel: After the Fall in 2007, several Spike miniseries, and a Spike ongoing series in 2010.

Inasmuch as Buffy knew of the " theft " as of " Sleeper ," Spike presumably shared the detail with her in an undepicted moment.

Spike first arrives in Sunnydale in the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in the episode " School Hard ", accompanied by Drusilla.

Notably, Spike's first act in Sunnydale is to attack Buffy and a large group of people at her school, making his first appearance the deadliest of any of Buffys " Big Bads ", as he very nearly kills Buffy, but Buffy's mother distracts Spike long enough for Buffy to recover.

Spike and Drusilla are major enemies of Buffy for much of the second season.

He reunites with Angel and seems genuinely pleased to see him, but is disgusted to find that Angel has a soul ( whether or not Spike in fact knew that Angel's acquisition of a soul is why he left the group nearly a century before has never been made clear ) and is in love with the current Slayer, Buffy Summers.

Spike decides to ally himself with Buffy against Angelus ; as he explains to Buffy, in addition to wanting Drusilla back, he also wants to " save the world ":

Spike reappears in the Season Three episode " Lovers Walk ", in a drunken depression after Drusilla, offended by his alliance with Buffy, dumps him for a Chaos demon.

Spike explains he was tasting whether she was evil, as his source claimed.

Angel questions the source, and Spike says it was " Doyle ", the tattooed man who gets visions from the Powers That Be.

With the humans distracted, an enraged Spike escapes with Harmony, ranting about his disgust with Buffy and his weariness with how she is seemingly the source of everything wrong with his life.

Everyone sings, “ For He ’ s a Jolly Good Fellow ” and yells for Spike to give a speech.

Harmony arrives and yells at Drusilla for hurting Spike.

Other visual and aural cues are also taken from film noir, in ‘ Pierrot Le Fou ’ for instance, Spike battles an enraged homicidal clown across a fairground, accompanied by lighting and camera angles any film noir would be proud of.

Spike decided to identify with his character, and told disbelieving reporters that he thought it would be a nice comfortable rest for him.

( The blonde glimpsed in Rome is later revealed to be a decoy Buffy, set up by Andrew Wells, who had researched the history between Angel, Spike and The Immortal, and thought the idea would be " hilarious ".

In 1952's Tree for Two by Friz Freleng, Sylvester is cornered in the back alley and this would result in Spike getting mauled by a black panther that had escaped from a zoo.

Originally, Giles was to appear in " A Hole in the World " as the one whom Angel and Spike approached in an attempt to save Fred, because Whedon needed a character who would be instantly believed ( by the characters and by the audience ) when he said there was no way to save Fred.

" Though she never considered portraying Drusilla with a Southern American accent, as James Marsters had considered for Spike, she notes that invited comparisons with Blanche DuBois would also have been interesting.

Another running gag that occurred during many of Droopy's cartoon's was whenever Spike, or another of Droopy's adversaries, was chopping down a tree, he would run far away from the tree as it was about to crush Droopy, point to the sky, and shout, " TIM ....." Then, in a moment of surprise, the tree would change direction and end up crushing him instead and he would finish by saying, "..... ber "

A boy named Spike would appear as a regular character in Seasons 1 and 2.

Then in Seasons 3 and 4 and the movie, his son Daniel would replace him as these episode took place in the future where Spike had grown up.

In the penultimate episode of Season 4, the government overseers rule that the former Initiative base would be filled with cement to hide evidence of its existence, but in " The Killer in Me ", Buffy and Spike are able to access the ruined facility.
