Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship and its crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), first officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ), in the 23rd century.

Their lines, as Spock and McCoy, were modified for Doohan and Koenig.

One element from Yesteryear that has become canon by depiction within Star Trek: The Original Series is the Vulcan city of ShiKahr, depicted in a background scene wherein Kirk, Spock and McCoy walk across a natural stone bridge ( first depicted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ) in the remastered " Amok Time ".

The passionate, sometimes cantankerous McCoy frequently argues with Kirk's other confidant, science officer Spock, and occasionally is bigoted toward Spock's Vulcan heritage.

This causes mental anguish for McCoy, who in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ( 1984 ) helps restore Spock's katra to his reanimated body.

" Exquisite chemistry " among Kelley, William Shatner, and Leonard Nimoy manifested itself in their performances as McCoy, Captain James T. Kirk and science officer Spock, respectively.

" They chose to reveal McCoy befriended Kirk first, explaining the " bias " in their friendship and why he would often be a " little dismissive " of Spock.

McCoy is someone to whom Kirk unburdens himself and is a foil to Spock.

Twenty times on the original Star Trek, McCoy declares someone or something deceased with the line, " He's dead ", " He's dead, Jim ", or something similar ; the phrase is considered a catchphrase of the character, although actor Kelley disliked repeating such lines, and refused to say it on The Wrath of Khan when Spock is near death ; James Doohan as Montgomery Scott says " He's dead already " instead.

The phrase also appears in the 2009 reboot, in which McCoy ( Karl Urban ) says " I'm a doctor, not a physicist " to Spock.

* In Diane Carey's 1999 Red Sector, Spock and Leonard McCoy try to cure a virus that has infected the Romulan royal family.

In " The Paradise Syndrome "," the Enterprise attempts to save a pre-industrial planet by moving an asteroid that was on a collision course with it ; when McCoy asks Kirk if he should warn the people, Kirk and Spock only point out the people would not understand the warning, and neither makes any reference to the Prime Directive.

Kirk's most significant relationships in the television series are with first officer Spock and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard " Bones " McCoy.

The series ' creators feel that " Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest should be treated as ' classic ' characters like Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings or even Hamlet, Othello or Romeo.

According to Dr. McCoy, Spock, and presumably all Vulcans, have almost no blood pressure.

In addition, their hearts are located on the right side of the torso, in between the ribs and pelvis, as Dr. McCoy once says about Spock: “ He is lucky that his heart is where his liver should be, or he ’ d be dead !” ( ST: TOS, A Private Little War )

In a later TOS episode " Requiem for Methuselah ", Spock specifically requests a Terran brandy after Dr. McCoy, while serving himself and Captain Kirk, observes that he had no expectation that Spock would be joining them in a drink for fear that the alcohol would affect his logic faculties.

In the TOS episode " Mirror, Mirror ," Spock of the Mirror Universe performed a forced mind meld on Dr. Leonard McCoy in order to learn what McCoy was keeping secret.

Such was the case with Spock, who, near the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, implanted his katra into the mind of Dr. McCoy prior to sacrificing his life to save the USS Enterprise from Khan's attack.

Leonard McCoy attempted to use the " neck pinch " while carrying Spock's katra in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, but was unsuccessful for reasons unknown.

Star Trek depicts a " troika " of Spock, Kirk, and Doctor Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ); while McCoy often acts as Kirk's conscience, Spock offers the captain an emotionally detached, logical perspective.

Kirk and Spock clash at Starfleet Academy, but, over the course of the movie, Kirk focuses his " passion and obstinance and the spectrum of emotions " and becomes captain of the Enterprise.

Some Vulcans, such as T ' Pol, Sarek ( in his later years, due to a rare disease which can affect Vulcans over the age of 200 years ), and Soval, carry their emotions close to the surface, and are prone to emotional outbursts, even without outside influences or illness ; T ' Pau certainly displayed restrained but definite emotions in the TOS episode " Amok Time ", including suspicion of the Human visitors followed by admiration and approval of their friendship for Spock, and contempt for Spock's humanity.

The neck pinch itself ( referred to in scripts as ' FSNP ', or ' Famous Spock Neck Pinch ') was created by Leonard Nimoy, who objected to a scene in one early episode that required Spock to knock a guard unconscious by hitting him over the head.

Nimoy was given casting approval over who would play the young Spock in the newest film.

In 1967, Spock was to be nominated as Martin Luther King, Jr .' s vice-presidential running mate at the National Conference for New Politics over Labor Day weekend in Chicago.

" Many of the openings featured non-celebrities, but some featured stars from TV shows, most of which broadcast over CBS, such as The Bob Newhart Show and One Day at a Time, as well as other characters with a connection to the network, including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, dressed as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock ; characters from the Peanuts cartoons ; and Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers ' Neighborhood.

Conspicuous by his absence was Leonard Nimoy, who declined to return due to a marketing issue over the Spock character, his displeasure over Roddenberry's screening of Star Trek blooper footage at various conventions and obligations to the play Equus, although early scripts included him.

In the episode " Errand of Mercy ," also set in 2267, Spock estimates that Starfleet has invested over 122, 200 credits in his training as a Starfleet officer.

At this moment, father and son have reconciled as they grieve together over the losses of their world and loved ones, before Spock leaves to stop Nero from causing any more destruction and to avenge his mother's untimely death.

Later he took over from Stephen Tompkinson playing Spock in the Tim Firth comedy drama, Preston Front.

Capturing Kirk and preventing him from warning Spock, Korby later attempts to take over the Enterprise by creating an android duplicate of Kirk to further his mad quest to populate the universe with androids but the plan backfired.

Spock is imprisoned, while Kirk is taken to Kor's private chambers, where Kor expresses his admiration for Kirk, and his regret over what he must do in the interests of war.

With the battle over, Spock gives up his claim to T ' Pring, but questions her choice of Kirk as her champion.

Riker and Picard discuss the developing details over a signal that Data and Spock have modified.

While they are recovering on the starship's bridge, Spock says that they have three days to live over again, to which Captain Kirk replies hopefully, " Not those last three days.

First Officer Spock makes inquiries and discovers there are over 200, 000 of these androids, and that they may be controlled by some as yet unseen central operator.

Mr. Spock compares the situation to a game of chess ; " In chess, when one player is outmatched, the game is over " and regrets that he can find no logical answer.

Spock believes the Redjac entity has taken over the ship through its computer and that the entity will become stronger by feeding off the crew's growing fear.

With Spock also afflicted, and himself being the only flag officer on hand, Stocker takes over the ship.

Spock and McCoy attempt to beam down, but the ship is taken over by a power beam activated by the Providers.

Kirk and his Science Officer, Mr. Spock, rush over to the scene, finding three crewmen down ; two dead, the other, Ensign Rizzo, near death.

Indeed, the book's foreword is written by Mr. Spock himself, in the form of a letter the Vulcan writes to Leonard Nimoy, to express confusion over the highly illogical title.
