Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship and its crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), first officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ), in the 23rd century.

Their lines, as Spock and McCoy, were modified for Doohan and Koenig.

One element from Yesteryear that has become canon by depiction within Star Trek: The Original Series is the Vulcan city of ShiKahr, depicted in a background scene wherein Kirk, Spock and McCoy walk across a natural stone bridge ( first depicted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ) in the remastered " Amok Time ".

The passionate, sometimes cantankerous McCoy frequently argues with Kirk's other confidant, science officer Spock, and occasionally is bigoted toward Spock's Vulcan heritage.

This causes mental anguish for McCoy, who in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ( 1984 ) helps restore Spock's katra to his reanimated body.

" Exquisite chemistry " among Kelley, William Shatner, and Leonard Nimoy manifested itself in their performances as McCoy, Captain James T. Kirk and science officer Spock, respectively.

" They chose to reveal McCoy befriended Kirk first, explaining the " bias " in their friendship and why he would often be a " little dismissive " of Spock.

McCoy is someone to whom Kirk unburdens himself and is a foil to Spock.

Twenty times on the original Star Trek, McCoy declares someone or something deceased with the line, " He's dead ", " He's dead, Jim ", or something similar ; the phrase is considered a catchphrase of the character, although actor Kelley disliked repeating such lines, and refused to say it on The Wrath of Khan when Spock is near death ; James Doohan as Montgomery Scott says " He's dead already " instead.

The phrase also appears in the 2009 reboot, in which McCoy ( Karl Urban ) says " I'm a doctor, not a physicist " to Spock.

* In Diane Carey's 1999 Red Sector, Spock and Leonard McCoy try to cure a virus that has infected the Romulan royal family.

In " The Paradise Syndrome "," the Enterprise attempts to save a pre-industrial planet by moving an asteroid that was on a collision course with it ; when McCoy asks Kirk if he should warn the people, Kirk and Spock only point out the people would not understand the warning, and neither makes any reference to the Prime Directive.

Kirk's most significant relationships in the television series are with first officer Spock and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard " Bones " McCoy.

The series ' creators feel that " Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest should be treated as ' classic ' characters like Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings or even Hamlet, Othello or Romeo.

According to Dr. McCoy, Spock, and presumably all Vulcans, have almost no blood pressure.

In addition, their hearts are located on the right side of the torso, in between the ribs and pelvis, as Dr. McCoy once says about Spock: “ He is lucky that his heart is where his liver should be, or he ’ d be dead !” ( ST: TOS, A Private Little War )

In a later TOS episode " Requiem for Methuselah ", Spock specifically requests a Terran brandy after Dr. McCoy, while serving himself and Captain Kirk, observes that he had no expectation that Spock would be joining them in a drink for fear that the alcohol would affect his logic faculties.

In the TOS episode " Mirror, Mirror ," Spock of the Mirror Universe performed a forced mind meld on Dr. Leonard McCoy in order to learn what McCoy was keeping secret.

Such was the case with Spock, who, near the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, implanted his katra into the mind of Dr. McCoy prior to sacrificing his life to save the USS Enterprise from Khan's attack.

Leonard McCoy attempted to use the " neck pinch " while carrying Spock's katra in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, but was unsuccessful for reasons unknown.

Star Trek depicts a " troika " of Spock, Kirk, and Doctor Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ); while McCoy often acts as Kirk's conscience, Spock offers the captain an emotionally detached, logical perspective.

As his mate was not available on the Genesis planet ( where Spock underwent the two pon farr periods ), it was implied that he mated with Lt. Saavik, a female Vulcan scientist on the crew of the Enterprise who showed compassion in guiding him through the accelerated pon farr ( in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, a deleted scene was intended to confirm the implication ( i. e., that Saavik bore Spock's child ); its removal from the film, however, struck it from ' official ' Trek canon ).

An honor Nimoy did not receive, however, was the naming of asteroid 2309 Mr. Spock after his character, at least not directly.

When the mad Romulan captain, Nero, makes clear his intention to destroy Vulcan, Spock arrives to transport Sarek, Amanda, and the rest of the Vulcan council to safety ; however, Amanda is lost in the attempt.

For Picard however, the tone of the mission has changed — he must now inform Spock that his father has died.

Spock, however, has had his fill of shore leave, and requests to be returned to the Enterprise.

In the epilogue of Star Trek VI, Uhura had stated they received a communication from Starfleet Command that ordered the Enterprise to report to space dock to be decommissioned, however she may have been speaking only of the ship's original crew members as Captain James T. Kirk previously stated his crew was due to stand down in three months, while Spock noted this would be his last voyage on the Enterprise as a member of her crew ; and Captain Kirk states the ship " will become the care of another crew ," but no further information is given.

* Star Trek typically refers to warp drive ; however, in at least one episode, The Menagerie, a young Mr. Spock advised the crew of the Enterprise to " stand by for hyper drive "

Spock suggests that the creature might be a silicon-based lifeform and would thus be resistant to the " Type I " handheld phasers carried by the colony guards ; however, the landing party's " Type II " phasers, basically a firepower-boosting pistol grip for a Type I handheld unit, which snaps into it with additional power storage in the grip, should be able to stop it.

Nomad however, corrects Mr. Spock by saying that its mission is to " find and sterilize imperfection.

Scotty reports that the transporter unit ionizer is damaged and would normally take a week to repair ; however, he and Spock rig up a connection to power the transporter from the ship's impulse drive.

Soon the landing party starts to notice painful blue sores are forming on their bodies ; Spock however remains immune.

Scott's repair to the engine is successful and Spock barely manages to get the Galileo off the ground and back into orbit, however by this time the Enterprise has given up the search and is heading back on course to Makus III.

The court-martial resumes and the bench is prepared to hand down a verdict however, Spock enters, ready to present new evidence on behalf of his Captain: the suspected tampering with the computer system.

Chief Engineer Scott happens to stop in and witnesses Chapel's beating of Spock and tries to stop her, however M ' Benga arrives to explain that Spock's life is in danger and resumes the slapping.

Spock erroneously refers to the car as a " flivver ;" however this term refers to the lightweight and inexpensive four-cylinder Model T Ford.

The moment comes when the Defiant should phase in again, and Spock attempts to lock onto the Captain ; however the ship is not where she is supposed to be.

Kirk and Spock awaken sometime later ; however, McCoy is slower to recover owing to his medical condition.

Having seized the book, however, Kirk and Spock figure out a way to bypass the Oracle's defenses and shut the machine down.

Kirk pretends to agree and surrender quietly, however, he manages to trigger a security alert to First Officer Spock on the bridge just before beaming up.

Spock however, remains accelerated a while longer and makes the necessary repairs to the ship's vital systems at lightning-fast speed.

Back on the " normal " Enterprise, First Officer Spock is later informed that the Captain never arrived on the planet ; however, Ambassador Hodin refuses to allow a search team to investigate.

Spock contacts Admiral Fitzgerald of Starfleet to report Kirk's disappearance and request further instruction ; however, Starfleet is bogged down by bureaucratic red tape between the planet Gideon and the Department of Planetary Treaties.

It contained a sex scene but was written to not identify its participants or their sexes ; Marchant stated in the next issue, however, that they were Kirk and Spock.
