* 1930 – The last 36 remaining inhabitants of St Kilda are voluntarily evacuated to other parts of Scotland.

In 1896, delegates from the stronger and wealthier VFA clubs — Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne — met to form a breakaway competition and in 1897, the Victorian Football League ( VFL ), was born as an eight-team competition.

In their first year in the AFL the Lions made the finals, finishing in eighth position after being defeated by the St Kilda Football Club in a Qualifying Final.

Essendon did make the finals in 1972 and 1973 under the autocratic direction of Des Tuddenham ( Collingwood ) but they were beaten badly in successive elimination finals by St. Kilda and would not taste finals action again until the very end of the decade.

2007 was a much better season for Essendon, in which, despite significant wins over Adelaide ( twice ), Fremantle, St Kilda, Sydney ( by one point in Sydney ), the previous year's premiers West Coast ( their second successive win by a solitary point ) and Carlton, they missed the finals for the third year running.

Prominent street art precincts include ; Fitzroy, Collingwood, Northcote, Brunswick, St. Kilda and the CBD, where stencil and sticker art is prominent.

Only six breeding colonies are known: Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands, St. Kilda Island off Scotland, Grimsey Island and Eldey Island near Iceland, Funk Island near Newfoundland, and the Bird Rocks ( Rochers-aux-Oiseaux ) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the breeding range of the Great Auk was restricted to Funk Island, Grimsey Island, Eldey Island, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and St. Kilda Island.

It was on the islet of Stac an Armin, St Kilda, Scotland, in July 1840, that the last Great Auk seen in the British Isles was caught and killed.

Three men from St Kilda caught a single " garefowl ", noticing its little wings and the large white spot on its head.

* Walton Ford, the American painter, has featured Great Auks in two paintings: " The Witch of St. Kilda " and " Funk Island ".

Despite recording the most successful home and away season in the game's history, the club went one win short of back-to-back premierships in losing the 2008 AFL Grand Final, but won the 2009 Grand Final against St Kilda.

Geelong holds a number of league records including the longest winning streak in AFL / VFL history ( 23 games ); the most goals kicked in a single game ( on two occasions-37. 17 ( 239 ) against Brisbane in 1992 and 37. 11 ( 233 ) against Melbourne in 2011 ); the highest score recorded in a single game ( 37. 17 ( 239 ) against Brisbane in 1992 ; the highest-ever aggregate season total for points scored ( 3, 334 points in 1992 ); the record for restricting an opponent to the lowest ever score in a game ( St Kilda 0. 1 ( 1 ) in 1899 ); the most consecutive 100-point victories ( 3 games in a row, in 1989 ); the longest winning streak in interstate games ( 12 games ) and achieved the longest home ground winning streak in VFL / AFL history — 29 games straight at Simonds Stadium ( also known as Kardinia Park ).

Geelong helped form the new VFL with other foundation clubs, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda.

The main islands include Barra, Benbecula, Berneray, Harris, Lewis, North Uist, South Uist, and St Kilda.

His second match was against St Kilda, scheduled as a 2-day game over consecutive weeks.

Currently services are held in B ' nai B ' rith House, East St Kilda. The refurbishment and partial reconstruction of a building in Caulfield to serve as the first Conservative Synagogue building in Australia is advanced, completion being anticipated during 2010.

As well as this, the club won the championship in both 1915 and 1918 for finishing on top of the ladder, and accounted for VFL side St Kilda comfortably.

In the book the author gives an account of a voyage to the archipelago of St. Kilda and its proximity to Rockall: "... and from it lies Rokol, a small rock sixty leagues to the westward of St. Kilda ; the inhabitants of this place call it ' Rokabarra '.

The family was Byzantine Catholic and attended St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church.

The custom of setting apart a special day for intercession for certain of the faithful on November 2 was first established by St. Odilo of Cluny ( d. 1048 ) at his abbey of Cluny in 998.

The legend connected with its foundation is given by Peter Damiani in his Life of St Odilo: a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land was cast by a storm on a desolate island.

By the Rule of St Benedict, which, until the Cluniac reforms, was the norm in the West, the abbot has jurisdiction over only one community.

Of these the precedence was originally yielded to the abbot of Glastonbury, until in AD 1154 Adrian IV ( Nicholas Breakspear ) granted it to the abbot of St Alban's, in which monastery he had been brought up.

Theodosius ' wife St Flacilla was instrumental in his campaign to end Arianism.

The Mariner's Cross is also referred to as St. Clement's Cross, in reference to the way this saint was martyred ( being tied to an anchor and thrown from a boat into the Black Sea in 102 ).

St. Ambrose was also traditionally credited with composing the hymn Te Deum, which he is said to have composed when he baptised St. Augustine of Hippo, his celebrated convert.

Common meter hymns were interchangeable with a variety of tunes ; more than twenty musical settings of " Amazing Grace " circulated with varying popularity until 1835 when William Walker assigned Newton's words to a traditional song named " New Britain ", which was itself an amalgamation of two melodies (" Gallaher " and " St. Mary ") first published in the Columbian Harmony by Charles H. Spilman and Benjamin Shaw ( Cincinnati, 1829 ).

It was recorded in St. Paul's, the chapel at Columbia University, chosen for the acoustics.

From 796 until his death he was Abbot of the great monastery of St. Martin of Tours where he founded a library by obtaining copies of books from libraries in his native England.

The ' far-away light ' () is a reference to St Elmo's Fire, an electrical discharge supposed by ancient Greek mariners to be an epiphany of the Dioscuri, but the meaning of the line was obscured by gaps in the papyrus until reconstructed by a modern scholar — such reconstructions are typical of the extant poetry ( see Scholars, fragments and sources below ).
