The Jimmy Giuffre Trio ( with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow ) received little attention during their original incarnation from 1960 – 62, but afterwards were regarded as one of the most innovative free jazz ensembles.

In the early 1960s Farmer established a trio with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Steve Swallow.

In 1967 he formed the Gary Burton Quartet along with guitarist Larry Coryell, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist Steve Swallow.
