Salmon-canning was so much part of the life of Steveston that it was also known as Salmonopolis.

The BCER also operated interuban trains between Vancouver and Marpole, and between Marpole, Steveston and New Westminster on the Vancouver and Lulu Island Railway, which it leased from Canadian Pacific.

On Canada Day, Richmond has an annual festival in Steveston called the Steveston Salmon Festival.

Salmon canning began on the river in 1871, with the first major cannery being the Phoenix, developed in 1882 by Marshall English and Samuel Martin ; by the 1890s there were 45 canneries, about half at Steveston.

Garry Point Park is the major park in Steveston, located at the southwest tip of the community ( and Lulu Island ).

For example, a Japanese judo and martial arts centre was developed in Steveston after the internment.

The city also includes the fishing village of Steveston, located in the far southwest corner of the city, and Burkeville, which shares Sea Island with the airport.

An early centre of European ( and later, Japanese ) settlement in Richmond was the old fishing village of Steveston on the southwestern tip of Lulu Island.

Steveston is now home to several museums and heritage sites, as well as a working harbour for fishing boats.

Currently, London Heritage Farm, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and the Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site in Steveston highlight these parts of Richmond's diverse history.

Both Steveston and Burkeville were independent villages until they were annexed by Richmond.

Through Richmond, Highway 99 travels north from the Steveston Highway interchange, at the north mouth of the tunnel, to a junction which connects to the Westminster Highway, Knight Street, and western end of Highway 91.
