Buffalo Springfield is a North American folk rock band renowned both for its music and as a springboard for the careers of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Jim Messina.

When The Company broke up at the end of that tour, Stills moved to the West Coast, where he worked as a studio musician and auditioned unsuccessfully for, among other things, The Monkees.

With their record deal canceled, Young and Palmer decided to head for Los Angeles where they hoped to meet with Stills.

Young, Stills and Furay would all record demos for the album, but Greene and Stone, who had installed themselves as the album's producers, deemed Young's voice " too weird " and assigned lead vocals on the majority of Young's songs to Furay.

Ever distrustful of Greene and Stone, Young and Stills also bickered between themselves, and each insisted on producing the recording sessions for his own compositions.

Unlike the studio version – which winds down after the instrumental break with a plaintive rendition of the third verse, accompanied by a banjo – in live performances the opening verses of " Bluebird " served as a springboard for an extended jam session, during which Stills, Young and Furay intertwined guitars for minutes on end.

With Palmer gone for good, Young also began to appear less and less frequently, often leaving Stills to handle all the lead guitar parts at concerts.

However, whether due to Palmer's persistent personal problems ( he had a tendency to get busted for drugs and get deported back to Canada ) or due to the simple fact that, with Stills, Young and Palmer handling the instruments, the band looked and sounded like Buffalo Springfield with Crosby and Nash doing little more than some background vocals.

Déjà Vu was also the first release on the Atlantic Records SD-7200 " superstar " line, created by the label for its highest-profile artists ; the subsequent solo albums by Crosby, Stills, and Nash would also be the next releases in this series.

Between September 1970 and May 1971, each of the quartet released high-profile solo albums: Young's After the Gold Rush in September ; Stills ' eponymous debut in November ; Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name in February, and Nash's Songs for Beginners in May.

In June and July of that year, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young met at Young's ranch and recording studio in Hawaii for a working vacation, ostensibly to record a new album, tentatively titled Human Highway.

Stills approached the pair at one of their concerts in Los Angeles, setting the stage for the return of the trio.

Crosby joined his partners for the tracks “ Delta ” and " Might as Well Have a Good Time ", and the album contained two hits, Nash ’ s “ Wasted on the Way ” and Stills ’ “ Southern Cross ,” the latter accompanied by a popular video on the nascent MTV network.
