On the first pastoral lease map ( held by WA State Records Office ) for the area dated 1887, it shows the northern bank between Wyndham and Kununurra, near House Roof Hill was held as a " Concession for Sugar Cane Planting ," although it was never taken up.

In 1742 a Sugar House, was built against the wall of the College, this structure was a fire risk and was the cause of great anxiety among the heralds.

In February 1800 the College was asked by the a Select Committee of the House of Commons to report to them the state of public records, again the heralds drew attention to the proximity of the Sugar House.

The Surveyor traced it back to a shed, recently erected by Mr. Alderman Smith, the owner of the Sugar House, who declared his readiness to do everything he could, but actually did very little to rectify the situation.
