Neill founded Summerhill School, the oldest existing democratic school in Suffolk, England in 1921.

She attended the independent Summerhill School in Leiston, Suffolk, England, but her high-school degree was awarded in St. Johann, near Kitzbühel, Austria.

Since the 1960s Leiston became famous outside the UK as the home of the Summerhill School, founded by A. S. Neill in the 1920s, which was the first major " free school "-referring to freedom in education.

Other than Summerhill School, Leiston also has its own primary and high school.

A. S. Neill, the Scottish founder of Summerhill School, was among those who protested the book burning.

His work nevertheless influenced a generation of intellectuals, including the writers Saul Bellow ( 1915 – 2005 ), William Burroughs ( 1914 – 1997 ) and Norman Mailer ( 1923 – 2007 ), and the founder of Summerhill School in England, A. S. Neill.

Lillian Richardson, Ethel's younger sister, married A. S. Neill after divorcing her first husband, and helped found and run Summerhill School.

Neill ( 1883 – 1973 ), founder of Summerhill, a progressive school in England, who argued that " the campaign against Reich seems largely ignorant and uncivilized, more like fascism than democracy ..."

It later moved to Sonntagberg in Austria, and in 1923 to Lyme Regis in England, where it acquired the name Summerhill.

Another major contributor to the field of Libertarian Education was Bertrand Russell whose own self-founded Beacon Hill School ( England ) ( one of several schools bearing this name ) is often compared with Summerhill.

They did so on the advice of A. S. Neill of Summerhill School in England.

It later emerged that this was because OFSTED ( The " OFfice for STandards in EDucation ") had placed Summerhill on a secret list of 61 independent schools marked as TBW ( To Be Watched ).

The tribunal only had the power to annul the notice of complaint, whereas the settlement made provisions for Summerhill to be inspected using unique criteria in future, to take account of its special educational philosophy.

In 2011, BDC Venture Capital won the CVCA “ Deal of the Year Award ” for the venture capital category, along with Brightspark Ventures and Summerhill Venture Partners, for its investment in Radian6 Technologies Inc.

His first wife Lillian Richardson was an Australian, the sister of the novelist Henry Handel Richardson ; his second wife Ena Wood Neill administered Summerhill school with him for many decades until their daughter, Zoë Neill Readhead, took over the school as headmistress.
