Feeling that Clark is the real person and that Clark is not afraid to be himself in his civilian identity, John Byrne has stated in interviews that he took inspiration for this portrayal from the George Reeves version of Superman.

Frank Miller's revamp of Batman with Batman: Year One, George Pérez's relaunching of Wonder Woman in Gods and Mortals, and John Byrne's reboot of Superman in The Man of Steel all took place shortly following Crisis on Infinite Earths, and changed substantial elements of the characters ' backstories.

The extent of his abilities range from simple suggestion to outright commandeering of another's mind as seen with his complete possession of Superman where he was able to make the Man of Steel perform acts far outside of the range of his normal sensibilities.

Metallo was soon kidnapped and his power source forcibly removed by Lex Luthor who, after discovering its debilitating effects on Kryptonians, created a ring with a kryptonite gem to keep Superman at bay.

When Lex Luthor tries to use his Kryptonite ring on Superman, it doesn't work due to the fact that Superman was actually Batman in disguise.

In the reality of Superman & Batman: Generations, the Guardians revealed that Alan Scott's power ring was actually a Green Lantern ring despite its apparent weakness to wood after Hal Jordan successfully harnessed it against Sinestro, realising that the ring actually had no weaknesses except what the user believed it possessed ; the Green Lantern Corps were vulnerable to yellow only because they believed the Guardians when they were told about this weakness, and Alan's ring's weakness to wood was caused when he was taken by surprise and struck on the back of the head with a wooden block during his first time using the ring.

" As an adult, Superman still keeps a Legion flight ring and has statues of the Legion on display in the Fortress of Solitude.

Despite defeating Superman in one-on-one battle ( by throwing him out of a ring and causing a disqualification, rather than through physical force ), his lack of a superpower meant he was initially given menial chores around the ship and later kicked out of the Legion for trying to take down Grimbor without back-up.

By using a kryptonite ring that Superman entrusted to him, Batman stalls the Man of Steel while Catwoman lets Lois Lane fall from the Daily Planet building.

In Superman & Batman: Generations-an AU where all heroes are shown aging in real-time -, Sinestro attacks Earth to try and eliminate Hal Jordan-who here went into politics rather than heroism, rising to the position of President in the 1980s -, but is defeated when Jordan dons Alan Scott's ring, having realised that the rings actually have no vulnerabilities except what the user believes they possess.

Despite the heroes scoring some victories in later confrontations, such as the Flash knocking out Züm with a punch at near-lightspeed or Green Lantern taking out Armek by exploiting the fact that they thought his ring was still vulnerable to yellow, the Hyperclan eventually managed to capture all of the Justice League, keeping Superman tortured with a mental illusion of green kryptonite.

In Superman / Batman: Absolute Power, Sur's ring is passed on to Uncle Sam when Wonder Woman attempts to rally a resistance against the dictatorship of Superman and Batman.

Meach used his vast array of powers to keep the duo at bay, impersonating a statue of himself and striking Batman with lightning, and imprisoning Superman in a kryptonite ring.

Meach reverted to human form with no knowledge of his activities as the Composite Superman, and Batman freed Superman from the ring as they were dropped, allowing Superman to save him and Robin.
