Amid great public interest, the Test series began at Sydney ; in reply to Australia's first innings of 450, Hobbs and Sutcliffe opened with 157 runs.

He shared a partnership of 90 with Sutcliffe, who batted at number six, and Hobbs went on to score 119 through cautious batting.
