In the 19th and 20th centuries, prominent figures of Indian spirituality such as Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharshi, Swami Sivananda and A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami emphasized the importance of ahimsa.

A fifth individual whom Drury identified as an important influence upon the New Age movement was the Indian Swami Vivekananda ( 1863 – 1902 ), an adherent of the philosophy of Vedanta who first brought Hinduism to the West in the late 19th century.

After an accidental meeting between Jamsetji N. Tata and Swami Vivekananda on a ship in 1893 where they discussed Tata's plan of bringing the steel industry to India, Tata wrote to Vivekananda five years later:

Born into an aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family of Calcutta, Swami Vivekananda showed an inclination towards spirituality and God realisation.

Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Dutta in Calcutta, the capital of British India, on 12 January 1863 during the Makar Sankranti festival.

In July 1890, accompanied by the fellow monk Swami Akhandananda ( also a disciple of Ramakrishna ), Vivekananda visited the Himalayas.

At Kanyakumari, the Swami meditated on the " last bit of Indian rock ", famously known later as the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, for three days.

Dr. Barrows, the president of the Parliament said, " India, the Mother of religions was represented by Swami Vivekananda, the Orange-monk who exercised the most wonderful influence over his auditors.

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness ( ISKCON ) translated the Sanskrit word " deva " as " demigod " in his literature when the term referred to a God other than the Supreme Lord.

On October 9, 1966, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, held the first recorded outdoor chanting session of the Hare Krishna mantra outside of the Indian subcontinent at Tompkins Square Park.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati ji ( Hindi: स ् व ा म ी दय ा नन ्‍ द सरस ्‍ वत ी) ( born August 15, 1930 ) is a monk of the Hindu monastic order and a renowned traditional teacher of Advaita Vedanta, and founder of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam

Swami Muktananda was the founder of Siddha Yoga.

Swami Vivekananda, the 19th Century Hindu Philosopher and founder of Vedanta Society, drew a number of parallels between the teachings of the Imitation and the Bhagavad Gita.

The couple had met the Swami through Werner Erhard, founder of " est ".

The movement for the building and supporting of gurukulas was started by the organization's founder and leader of the Hare Krishna movement, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

During this time Khandwa was visited by Swami Dayanad Saraswati of Arya Samaj fame, Swami Vivekanand, the great monk and founder of Ramkrishna Mission, Mahatma Gandhi in 1921, Lokmanya Tilak, and others.

Kirtan became more common with the spread of Gaudiya Vaishnavism by ISKCON's founder A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in the 1960s.

Swami Prabhavananda died on the bicentennial of America's independence, July 4, 1976, and on the 74th anniversary of the death, or mahasamadhi, of Swami Vivekananda, the founder of the Ramakrishna Order in India and many of the Vedanta centers in America and Europe.

During his career, Smith not only studied, but practiced Vedanta ( studying under Swami Satprakashananda, founder of the St. Louis Vedanta Center ), Zen Buddhism ( studying under Goto Zuigan ), and Sufi Islam for more than ten years each.

Adjoining the temple is the samadhi of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, built in pure white marble.

Swami Tathagatananda, a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order, and the Head of Vedanta Society, New York, wrote of the relationship:

He had a walk with Swami Premananda, a brother-disciple, and gave him instructions on the future of the Ramakrishna Math.

For writer Stephen Prothero, many perennialist thinkers ( including Armstrong, Huston Smith and Joseph Campbell ) are influenced by Hindu reformer Ram Mohan Roy and Hindu mystics Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.

They spent fifteen months in 1947-48, in the Ramakrishna Mission centre at Muvattupuzha with the consent of Swami Tapasyananda and Swami Agamananda.

Swami Vivekananda's lectures and writings, deriving their inspiration from the Indian spiritual tradition and the broad outlook of his Master Sri Ramakrishna, are a source of inspiration and have motivated numerous youth organizations, study circles, and service projects involving youth.

Other Hindu theophanies include Swami Vivekananda's experience of cosmic consciousness and a merging with the Nirguna Brahman when touched by the Hindu master Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

His religious school of thought led to the formation of the Ramakrishna Mission by his chief disciple Swami Vivekananda – both were influential figures in the Bengali Renaissance as well as the Hindu renaissance during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had sixteen disciples ( other than Swami Vivekananda ) who became monks of the Ramakrishna Order ; they are often considered his apostles.

" This prompted some of his students, including Narendranath Dutta ( later Swami Vivekananda ), to visit Ramakrishna.
