Sylhet ( Sylheti: ছ ি লট Silôţ, Bengali: স ি ল ে ট Ṣileţ ), is a major city in north-eastern Bangladesh.

It is the main city of Sylhet Division and Sylhet District, and was granted metropolitan city status in March 2009.

There are large shopping malls in the city, cosmetics and confectionery is mainly available in Bondor Bazar, handicrafts and textiles stores can be found in Zinda Bazar, these include the Al-Hamra Shopping City, Bluewater, Sylhet Millenium, Sylhet Plaza, Shukria Market and many others.

There are no national television stations based in Sylhet or broadcasting programs in Sylheti, however the British-owned Channel S has a team, correspondents and reporters based in the city and the region mostly with Sylheti programs.

The main newspapers produced in the city includes Sylheter Dak, Jalalabad, Manchitra, Probasha Protidin, Daily Sylhet Sanglap, and Aajker Sylhet.

The first Grameenphone Centre opened in Sylhet on 20 May 2007, which was the first telecommunication centre in the city.

The city of Sylhet is served by Osmani International Airport, located at the north of the city.

The bank primarily focuses on urban areas and has branches in most areas of the capital city of Dhaka, it also has branches in the cities of Chittagong and Sylhet.

Dhaka Division is bounded by the Indian state of Meghalaya to the north, Barisal Division to the south, Chittagong Division on the south-east, Sylhet Division to the east, Rangpur Division to the north-west, and Rajshahi and Khulna Divisions to the west.

Uddin is married to Komar Uddin ; his family are originally from Chhatak, Sunamganj in Sylhet.

Glutinous rice is often used in Sylhet and Khulna, which makes the broth quite distinct from other types in the country.

Sylheti ( Sylheti: ছ ি লট ী/ छ ी लहट ी Sīlôṭī ; Sileṭī ) is the language of Sylhet, which is also known as the Surma Valley and is located in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh, and also spoken in parts of the Northeast Indian states of Assam ( the Barak Valley ) and Tripura ( the North Tripura district ).

The traditional Devanagari alphabet is still used in India and Nepal to write Hindi and Nepalese respectively, but in Sylhet it has been tampered with in early nineteenth century to reduce the number of vowels and consonants, and eradicated all compound letters, to make it simple for the common folks.

The Sylheti language was written in the Sylheti Nagari script, which is not widely known. Sylhet has a rich heritage of literature in the Sylheti Nagari Script, ( or न ा गर ी, Nāgrī, the name of its parent writing system ) going back at least 200 years.

Sylheti is the language of the Surma Valley region bordering what are today the nations of Bangladesh and India and spoken throughout Sylhet Division in Bangladesh ( comprising the districts of Sylhet, Habiganj, Maulvi Bazar and Sunamganj ).

It is also spoken across the border in the Barak Valley region of Assam in India, in districts such as Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi all located to the east from Sylhet.

Sylhet is located on the banks of the Surma Valley and is surrounded by the Jaintia, Khasi and Tripura hills.

The Sylhet region is well known for its tea gardens and tropical forests.

After independence between India and Pakistan, Sylhet was then part of East Pakistan based on a referendum, and is now part of Bangladesh.

Sylhet was certainly known by the rest of India, and is even referred to in the ancient Hindu sacred Tantric text, the Shakti Sangama Tantra, as ' Silhatta '.

The cuisine in Sylhet is quite similar to that shared across the country which is rice with chicken or meat curry, it does however have different staples of fish such as the Pabda fish, and the citrus fruit known as shatkora is used for flavour in curries, which is grown primarily in the Sylhet region.

He joined the Bengal Civil Service ( judicial ) in the year 1942, and subsequently served as district judge in Sylhet, Rangpur and Dhaka.

The dialect spoken by those in Chittagong and Sylhet are particularly distinctive.

Sylheti language in antiquity was a branch of Indo-Aryan language, which used to be written in Devanagari alphabet by the Aryan people of Sylhet.

During this time, Sylhet was probably inhabited by Indo-Aryan Brahmins, though ethnically the population would also have traces of Assamese, Arabs, Persians and Turks.

In the ancient and early medieval period, Sylhet was ruled primarily by local chieftains as viceroy of the kings of Pragjyotishpur.

Sylhet was previously a Brahmin kingdom, controlled by the rajas.

In 1301, Sylhet was conquered by Shamsu'd-Din Firuz, a Bengali enterprising governor.

Sylhet is well connected by highways and railway links to Chittagong and Dhaka, as well as other parts of Sylhet.

The Sylhet Railway Station is the main railway station providing trains on national routes operated by the state-run Bangladesh Railway.

Known formerly as the Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee and then as the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee ( currently, BRAC does not represent an acronym ), BRAC was initiated in 1972 by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed at Sulla in the district of Sylhet as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation project to help returning war refugees after the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
