* The Vietnamese New Year is the Tết Nguyên Đán which is for most times the same day as the Chinese New Year.

Vietnamese New Year, more commonly known by its shortened name Tết or " Tết Nguyên Đán ", is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam.

Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions.

They consider Tết to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân ( spring festival ).

Although Tết is a national holiday among all Vietnamese, each region and religion has its own customs.

The general atmosphere leading up to Tết is in the bustle of shopping, decorating the home, cooking traditional Tết food and waiting for relatives to return home.

As the shops will be closed during Tết, everyone is busy buying food, clothes, and decorations for their house.

During Tết the altar is thoroughly cleaned and new offerings are placed there.

The first day of Tết is reserved for the nuclear family.

The act of being the first person to enter a house on Tết is called xông đất, xông nhà or đạp đất, which is one of the most important rituals during Tết.

Sweeping during Tết is taboo or xui ( unlucky ), since it symbolizes sweeping the luck away.

It is also taboo for anyone who experienced a recent loss of a family member to visit anyone else during Tết.

Traditionally but not strictly, the second day of Tết is usually reserved for friends, while the third day is for teachers, who command respect in Vietnam.

This is also the time where the elders will hand out to red envelopes with money to the children for good luck in exchange for Tết greetings ( below ).

At Tết every house is usually decorated by hoa mai – Ochna integerrima ( in the central and southern parts of Vietnam ) or hoa đào – peach flower ( in the northern part of Vietnam ) or hoa ban ( in mountain areas ).

In the north or central, the kumquat tree is a popular decoration for the living room during Tết.

Traditionally, everyone is one year older on Tết, so children would wish their grandparents health and longevity in exchange for mừng tuổi or lì xì利是.

As a result of the shift, North and South Vietnam celebrated Tết 1968 on different days.

The Lantern Festival in Taiwan ( also known as the Yuanxiao Festival or Shangyuan Festival in China ; Chap Goh Meh Festival in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore ; Yuen Siu Festival in Hong Kong, and " Tết Thượng Nguyên " or " Tết Nguyên Tiêu " in Vietnam ; corresponding Japanese event Koshōgatsu ); is a festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar year in the lunar calendar, the last day of the lunisolar lunar New Year celebration.

The festival is still celebrated in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as the Duanwu Festival or Tuen Ng Festival ( Cantonese ), in Korea as the Dano Festival, and Vietnam as the Tết Đoan Ngọ on the traditional lunar calendar date.

There are a lot of customs practiced during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year ( xông nhà ), ancestral worshipping, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.

People try to pay off their debts in advance so that they can be debt-free on Tết.

Family members often take turns to keep watch on the fire overnight, telling each other stories about Tết of past years.

Also, some of the food is vegetarian since it is believed to be good luck to eat vegetarian on Tết.

The Viet Cong, or National Liberation Front ( NLF ) broke the agreement and launched an attack campaign that began during the early morning hours of 30 January 1968, on Tết Nguyên Đán.

However, he was granted an amnesty on 31 January 2005 for Tết, the Vietnamese New Year, along with fellow dissidents Nguyen Van Ly, Nguyen Dinh Huy, and Huynh Van Ba.

Nguyễn Huệ proclaimed himself Emperor Quang Trung and defeated the Qing troops with 100, 000 men in a surprise 7 day campaign during the lunar new year ( Tết ).

Some examples include Diwali, Chinese New Year / Tết ( Vietnamese New Year ), Mid-Autumn Festival / Chuseok and Nepal Sambat.

The capital, Thanglong, was conquered in 1788 but a few months later, the Chinese army was defeated and the invasion turned into a debacle due to the surprise attack during Tết by Nguyen Hue, the second and most capable of the three Tay Son brothers.

In Vietnam, kumquat bonsai trees ( round kumquat plant ) are used as a decoration for the Tết ( Lunar New Year ) holiday.

Tết in the three Vietnamese regions can be divided into three periods, known as Tất Niên ( Before New Year's Eve ), Giao Thừa ( New Year's Eve ), and Tân Niên ( the New Year ), representing the preparation before Tết, the eve of Tết, and the days of and following Tết, respectively.

The first semester begins in late August and ends some time before Tết, while the second one begins right after the first one and lasts until June.
