The Pan-Green Coalition () or Pan-Green Camp, is an informal political alliance of the Republic of China, commonly known as " Taiwan ", consisting of the Democratic Progressive Party ( DPP ), Taiwan Solidarity Union ( TSU ), and the minor Taiwan Independence Party ( TAIP ).

After winning nine seats in the 225-member Legislative Yuan in December 2001, the TSU has largely displaced the Taiwan Independence Party ( TAIP ) as the strongly pro-Taiwan-independence political force and the TSU legislators began advocating relevant resolutions.

The Taiwan Independence Party 建國黨 ( TAIP ), otherwise known as the Taiwan Nation Party, is a political party in the Republic of China ( Taiwan ).

Disappointed by the Democratic Progressive Party's ( DPP ) gradual moderation of its support of Taiwan independence, some DPP members, many connected to Peng Ming-min's " Nation Building Association " formed the Taiwan Independence Party in 1996.

Some locals opposed the name change because they felt it reflected a Democratic Progressive Party Taiwan Independence viewpoint.

Some supporters of Taiwan Independence seek the flag change as part of a larger change to replace the Constitution of Republic of China that was brought to Taiwan by the Kuomintang at the end of the civil war on the Mainland in 1949.

The first example would be the Independence of Mongolia, and the second example would be the reclamation of Taiwan.

However, a political crisis appeared imminent as the Ministry of Justice filed charges against the DPP for violating martial law restrictions, but President Chiang defused it by announcing that martial law would end and that new political parties could be formed as long as they supported the Republican Constitution and renounced both communism and Taiwan Independence.

He was arrested at the age of 21 in 1962 and charged with creating the " Taiwan Independence League " ( a study group ) with the intention of overthrowing the Kuomintang government, Shih was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 1962 he was arrested for alleged involvement in the " Taiwan Independence League ", over 30 more " accomplices ", mostly army officer school and university students, were also arrested.

Pro-Taiwan Independence forces of the Democratic Progressive Party won the elections in Taiwan for the first time, limiting talks of Chinese reunification.

Two aircraft carrier battlegroups, Carrier Group Seven centered on USS Nimitz, and Carrier Group Five centered on USS Independence, were present in the region, and have been publically claimed to have entered the Taiwan Strait.

On March 8, 1996, also a presidential election year in the U. S., the U. S. government under President Clinton announced that it was deploying the Independence carrier battle group ( CVBG ), already stationed in the western Pacific, to international waters near Taiwan.

When Chiang was defeated by CPC forces in mainland China in 1949, he retreated to Taiwan with his government and his most disciplined troops, along with most of the KMT leadership and a large number of their supporters ; Chiang Kai-shek had taken effective control of Taiwan at the end of WWII as part of the overall Japanese surrender, when Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to Republic of China troops.

Today, Chiang's popularity in Taiwan is divided along political lines, enjoying greater support among Kuomintang supporters.

El Salvador is one of the ROC's strongest supporters in the UN and the National Legislative Assembly's President Silfrido Reyes visited Taiwan recently to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Republic of China.

Taiwan has historically benefited from the flight of many well-educated, wealthy Chinese to settle on the island: during early Qing Dynasty, the preceding Ming dynasty supporters survived for a brief period of time in exile in Taiwan, and in 1949, as the Chinese Communist Party gained control of mainland China, two million Kuomintang ( KMT ) supporters fled to the island.

If some supporters articulate that they agree to the independence of Taiwan, they may either be referring to the notion of formally creating an independent Republic of Taiwan, or to the notion that Taiwan is synonymous with the current Republic of China and already is independent, which is against the People's Republic of China's claim.

) Some supporters advocate withdrawing from Kinmen and Matsu, which are controlled by Taiwan but are closer to mainland China.

Many supporters of independence for Taiwan view the history of Taiwan since the 17th century as a continuous struggle for independence and use it as an inspiration for the current political movement.

It was only the campaigning of admiral Shi Lang and other supporters that convinced the Emperor not to abandon Taiwan.

The validity of the proclamation is subject to some debate, with some supporters of Taiwan independence arguing that it is invalid, and that the date only marks the beginning of military occupation that persists to the present.

In Taiwan, the term " mainland " is often used to refer to mainland China ( Hong Kong and Macau excluded ), by the Kuomintang ( KMT, " Chinese Nationalist Party ") and its supporters, who share the view that China encompasses both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Many supporters of Taiwanese independence fear that unification would hurt the democratic progress in the ROC ; and some contend that Taiwan is not part of China.

Until the mid-1990s, supporters of Chinese reunification on Taiwan were also bitterly opposed to the Communist Party of China.

Since the mid-1990s there has been a considerable warming of relations between the Communist Party and supporters of Chinese reunification as both oppose the pro-Taiwan independence bloc that was elected to executive power in Taiwan following President Lee's retirement.

This has brought about the accusation that reunification supporters are attempting to sell out Taiwan.

Because of its conservative financial approach and its entrepreneurial strengths, Taiwan suffered little from the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-1999 compared to many of its neighbors.

During the immediate postwar period, the Kuomintang ( KMT ) administration on Taiwan was repressive and extremely corrupt compared with the previous Japanese rule, leading to local discontent.

This results in a decline of active political opposition to the PRC from overseas Chinese when compared with the times before the Taiwanization movement in Taiwan.

In 1947, the average annual income in India was $ 439, compared with $ 619 for China, $ 770 for South Korea, and $ 936 for Taiwan.
