Home-based PCs such as the Tandy 1000 allowed up to three channels of sound for the and commands.

At its introduction, the 68000 was first used in high-priced systems, including multiuser microcomputers like the WICAT 150, early Alpha Microsystems computers, Sage II / IV, Tandy TRS-80 Model 16, and Fortune 32: 16 ; single-user workstations such as Hewlett-Packard's HP 9000 Series 200 systems, the first Apollo / Domain systems, Sun Microsystems ' Sun-1, and the Corvus Concept ; and graphics terminals like Digital Equipment Corporation's VAXstation 100 and Silicon Graphics ' IRIS 1000 and 1200.

The Tandy 1000 was the first in a line of more-or-less IBM PC compatible home computer systems produced by the Tandy Corporation for sale in its Radio Shack chain of stores.

Released in November 1984, the Tandy 1000 was followed by a series of models which appended two or three letters to the name, after a space ( e. g. Tandy 1000 EX, Tandy 1000 SX, Tandy 1000 TX, Tandy 1000 RL, Tandy 1000 RLX ).

Few personal computers used the 80186, with some notable exceptions: the Australian Dulmont Magnum laptop, one of the first laptops ; the Wang Office Assistant, marketed as a PC-like stand-alone word processor ; the Mindset ; the Siemens PC-D ( not 100 % IBM PC-compatible but using MS-DOS 2. 11: de: Siemens PC-D ); the Compis ( a Swedish school computer ); the RM Nimbus ( a British school computer ); the Unisys ICON ( a Canadian school computer ); ORB Computer by ABS ; the HP 100LX, HP 200LX, HP 1000CX and HP OmniGo 700LX ; the Tandy 2000 desktop ( a somewhat PC-compatible workstation with sharp graphics for its day ); the Philips: YES ; the Nokia MikroMikko 2.

At one time, versions for Tandy, Amiga and Atari computers were offered, as well as a UNIX command-line compiler.

Computer City was a supercenter concept featuring name-brand computers, software and related products ; by the end of 1993, Tandy had 40 locations, including three in Europe.

All Tandy 1000 computers featured built-in Tandy video hardware with color graphics ( CGA compatible with enhancements ), enhanced sound ( based on one of several variants of the Texas Instruments SN76496 sound generator ), game ports compatible with those on the TRS-80 Color Computer, an IBM-standard floppy disk controller supporting two drives, and a parallel printer port, all integrated into the motherboard.

( Hard disks were high end, not standard, equipment for home computers until the late years of the Tandy 1000 line, explaining the absence of an integrated hard disk controller from most Tandy 1000 motherboards.

Unlike most PC clones, several Tandy 1000 computers had MS-DOS built into ROM and could boot in a few seconds.

The original Tandy 1000 ( and many other models ), like most home computers sold at the time, did not have a hard disk drive.

There was a quirk in the DOS 4. 0 environment that prevented that version of DOS from working with Tandy 1000 HX computers.

The Tandy SL and TL series of computers were updates of the SX and TX respectively.

The Tandy 1000 RL / RLX / RSX series were slim-line desktop home computers.

This was especially true when OS-9 was available for popular 6809-based computers such as the FM-7, FM-77, and the Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer and its near-clone, the Dragon.

It was used in the Nintendo Game Boy, the Sinclair ZX80, ZX81, ZX Spectrum and the Amstrad CPC home computers as well as the MSX architecture and the Tandy TRS-80 series — among many others.

Altos shipped a version for their Intel 8086 based computers early in 1982, Tandy Corporation shipped TRS-XENIX for their 68000-based systems in January 1983, and SCO released their port to the IBM PC in September 1983.

Both Tandy / RadioShack and HP also produced portable computers of varying designs during this period.

TRS-DOS should not be confused with Tandy DOS a version of MS-DOS licensed from Microsoft for Tandy's x86 line of personal computers ( PCs ).

He focused on developing programs for Tandy computers, spending several years as part of the software-development community that grew up around the Tandy products.

He never lost interest in this on-line business, and though he left Tandy, he stayed active in the SIGs that serviced the users of Tandy computers.

Shortly afterward, Kyocera introduced one of the first portable, battery-powered laptop computers, sold in the U. S. as the Tandy Model 100, which featured an LCD screen and telephone-modem data transfer capability.

By 1983 Bevan was expressing a desire to join Black Sabbath permanently and Lynne and Tandy were recording tracks for the Electric Dreams soundtrack under Jeff Lynne's name.

The 1990s, though, were a turbulent time for graphics development, as the computer industry was collapsing, with long-time computer makers such as Tandy / Radio Shack, Atari, and Commodore / Amiga disappearing, and the PC and Macintosh markets were fighting for dominance.

In a few instances, a slash and a number or additional letters were appended to these letters ( e. g. Tandy 1000 TL / 2, Tandy 1000 RL / HD ).

For most Tandy 1000 models other than the compact EX and HX that did not come already equipped with a hard drive, Tandy offered hard disk options in the form of " hardcards " that were installed in one of the computer's expansion slots and consisted of a controller and drive ( typically a 3. 5 " MFM or RLL unit with a Western Digital controller ) mounted together on a metal bracket.

Eventually, in 1993, Tandy Corporation sold its computer manufacturing business to AST Computers, and all Tandy computer lines were terminated.

The Tandy 1000 SX and TX were the first models in the Tandy 1000 line to have a built-in DMA controller.

While the 3-voice sound chip and DAC were still present, Tandy video was dropped.

The devices were manufactured by Tandy and distributed by Casio, while Palm provided the PIM software.

Most other computer lines that were not IBM compatible, including those from Apple Inc .( Apple II, Macintosh ), Tandy, Commodore, Amiga, and Atari, offered their own expansion buses.

Tandy then took proceedings against the lord lieutenant for issuing a proclamation for his arrest ; although the action failed, it increased Tandy's popularity, and his expenses were paid by the Society of the United Irishmen.

Amongst the producers were John Lloyd, Douglas Adams, David Tyler, Jimmy Mulville, Harry Thompson, Gareth Edwards, Armando Iannucci, Jon Magnusson, Geoffrey Perkins, Alan Nixon, Griff Rhys Jones, Sarah Smith, Diane Messias, Maria Esposito and Adam Tandy.

TRS-DOS ( which stood for the Tandy Radio Shack-Disk Operating System ) was the operating system for the Tandy TRS-80 line of 8-bit Zilog Z80 microcomputers that were sold through Radio Shack through the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Lynne, Bevan and Tandy returned to the studio in 1985 as a three-piece ( with Christian Schneider playing saxophone on some tracks ) to record ELO's final album of the 20th century, Balance of Power, released early in 1986.

While the Tandy 1000 had three XT-compatible expansion slots ( with some slight differences ), early Tandy memory upgrade boards took up two of the slots to get to.
