D., who died a martyr of charity, in 1847 ; Father John Robinson, O. S. B, who died, deeply mourned by his flock, in 1837, and Father Vincent Glover, O. S. B, who died in 1840, aged 49.

Paul Revere was descended from Huguenot refugees, as was Henry Laurens, who signed the Declaration of Independence for South Carolina ; Jack Jouett, who made the ride from Cuckoo Tavern to warn Thomas Jefferson and others that Tarleton and his men were on their way to arrest him for crimes against the king ; Francis Marion, and a number of other leaders of the American Revolution and later statesmen.

General Sir Banastre Tarleton, 1st Baronet, GCB ( 21 August 1754 – 15 January 1833 ) was a British soldier and politician.

In January 1781, the Legion was part of the force under Tarleton defeated by Daniel Morgan at the Battle of Cowpens.

They sustained heavy losses in the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781 after being ordered by Tarleton to charge a formation of American militia.

Although Tarleton gained the reputation among Americans as a butcher for his involvement in the Waxhaw massacre in South Carolina, he was a hero in Liverpool, England.

Late nineteenth century schools included Burnley Wood School located between Glebe Street and Branch Road ; Todmorden Road Council Schools ; and St. Stephen's Church of England School in St. Stephen's Street located between Oxford Road and Tarleton Street.

On his way to Fort Ninety-Six, Morgan was attacked by Banastre Tarleton and gained a decisive victory over him at the Battle of Cowpens.
