When the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910 out of the main British colonies in the region, the Bechuanaland Protectorate, Basutoland ( now Lesotho ), and Swaziland ( the " High Commission Territories ") were not included, but provision was made for

The Kowloon Peninsula to the south of Boundary Street and the New Territories to the north of Hong Kong Island were added to Colonial Hong Kong in 1860 and 1898 respectively.

However, in the case of Hong Kong, irredentism was incidental: The New Territories part of the British colony were only on a lease expiring in 1997 anyway and, with their surrender, it was thought the Crown territory of Hong Kong itself would be nonviable as an entity independent of mainland China.

Territories that were once part of the British Empire

When the British attempted to take control of the New Territories in 1898 they were resisted by the local militias which had been formed for mutual defence against pirate raids.

The Northwest Territories entered the Canadian Confederation July 15, 1870, but the current borders were formed April 1, 1999, with the creation of Nunavut.

Territories located between Quebec and the Mississippi Delta were opened up to establish Canada and Louisiana.

On 21 May 2002 they were granted access to full British citizenship by the British Overseas Territories Act 2002 and there is a special Saint Helena passport issued to Saint Helenians.

* Lloydminster, Canada, on the Saskatchewan-Alberta border, was formed as a single entity in 1903, when both future provinces were part of the Northwest Territories, but was divided into two separate entities in 1905 because the border between the newly created provinces bisected the community.

The ministries to be represented were Interior, Justice, the Four Year Plan and Occupied Eastern Territories.

Balloon envelopes and apparatus were found in Montana, Arizona, Saskatchewan, in the Northwest Territories, and in the Yukon Territory.

According to the agreements of the Yalta Conference, Lviv was integrated into the Ukrainian SSR, most of the Poles living in Lviv were transferred into Polish Recovered Territories and the city became the main centre of the western part of Soviet Ukraine, inhabited predominantly by Ukrainians with significant Russian minority.

The Ellice Islands were administered as British protectorate by a Resident Commissioner from 1892 to 1916 as part of the British Western Pacific Territories ( BWPT ), and later as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974.

The territorial boundaries claimed as sovereign and controlled by the Native American nations living in what was then known as the Indian Territories — the portion of the early United States east of the Mississippi River not yet claimed or allotted to become Oklahoma -- were fixed and determined by national treaties with the United States Federal government under terms recognizing these entities as dependent but internally sovereign, or autonomous nations under the sole jurisdiction of the Federal government.

From this vast swath of territory were created three provinces ( Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta ) and two territories ( Yukon Territory and North-West Territories, now Yukon and Northwest Territories ), and two extensions each to Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba.

Subsequently, in 1905, the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created from the Northwest Territories.

The Northwest Territories were governed from Ottawa from 1870 until the 1970s, except for the brief period between 1898 and 1905 when it was governed by an elected assembly.

Like in the Northwest Territories, federal responsibilities were transferred to the Yukon government in the 1980s.

The Rough Riders were recruited from the ranches of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Indian Territories, so the term was still in popular use during the Spanish American War.

Under the terms of the 1898 Second Convention of Peking, the New Territories and 200 smaller islands including Cheung Chau were leased to the United Kingdom for 99 years.

The next provinces to follow were New Brunswick in 1929, Newfoundland in 1935, Prince Edward Island in 1936, Nova Scotia in 1937, Québec in1959, and then the Northwest Territories in 1966.

Historically, in Southern Africa, the protectorates of Bechuanaland ( now Botswana ), Basutoland ( now Lesotho ) and Swaziland were administered as High Commission Territories by the Governor-General of South Africa, who was also the British High Commissioner for Bechuanaland, Basutoland, and Swaziland, until the 1930s, with various local representatives, and subsequently by the British High Commissioner ( from 1961 Ambassador ) to South Africa, who was represented locally in each territory by a Resident Commissioner.

In all other provinces and territories, namely British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon, coroners are not necessarily physicians but generally have legal, medical, or investigative backgrounds.

The First Intifada ( 1987 – 93 ) provoked a shift in Palestinian politics towards the Occupied Palestinian Territories, which proved a severe handicap for the largely diaspora-based DFLP.

* 1870 – Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory are transferred to Canada from the Hudson's Bay Company, and the province of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories are established from these vast territories.

* April 15 – Helen Maksagak, Canadian, first Inuk and woman to be the Commissioner of both the Northwest Territories and Nunavut ( d. 2009 )

Dr. Alfred Meyer ( October 5, 1891 – April 11, 1945 ) was a Nazi official, achieving the rank of Staatssekretär and Deputy Reichsminister in the Reich Ministry for the Occupied Eastern Territories ( Reichministerium für die Besetzten Ostgebiete or Ostministerium ).

After the Red River Rebellion of 1869 – 1870, many of the Métis moved from Manitoba to the Fort Carlton region of the North-West Territories, where they founded a settlement at Batoche on the South Saskatchewan River.

* Palestinian Territories – Olive

Situated in the northern extremity of North America and covering about, this group of 36, 563 islands comprises much of the territory of Northern Canada – most of Nunavut and part of the Northwest Territories.

In western and northern Canada, the federal government created districts as subdivisions of the Northwest Territories 1870 – 1905, partly on the model of the districts created in the Province of Canada.

Hugh Richardson ( 21 July 1826 – 15 July 1913 ) was a stipendiary magistrate for the Saskatchewan district of the North-West Territories.

The British Western Pacific Territories were permanently governed as a group of minor insular colonial territories, under one single part-time Western Pacific High Commissioner ( 1905 – 1953 ), an office attached first to the governorship of Fiji, and subsequently to that of the Solomon Islands.
