In 1966, several rock releases were arguably concept albums in the sense that they presented a set of thematically-linked songs-and they also instigated other rock artists to consider using the album format in a similar fashion: The Beach Boys ' Pet Sounds was a musical portrayal of Brian Wilson's state of mind at the time ( and a major inspiration to Paul McCartney ).

However, later in 1966, Brian Wilson began work on the Smile album, which was intended as a narrative.

The final studio album for Columbia by the Desmond / Wright / Morello quartet was Anything Goes ( 1966 ) featuring Cole Porter songs.

Later artists performing comical versions of this song included Archie Campbell on his Have A Laugh On Me album in 1966, and Buck Owens on his album Too Old To Cut The Mustard in 1972.

In Berry's absence, Torrence released several singles on the J & D Record Co. label and recorded Save for a Rainy Day in 1966, a concept album featuring all rain-themed songs.

In the liner notes of the CD reissue of her 1966 album, Nancy In London, Sinatra states that she was " scared to death " of recording the song, and asked the songwriters: " Are you sure you don't want Shirley Bassey?

Lenny Kaye used the term " classic garage-punk ," in reference to a song recorded in 1966 by The Shadows of Knight, in the liner notes of the anthology album Nuggets, released in 1972.

The term was first used in print in the Austin American Statesman in an article about the band titled " Unique Elevators shine with psychedelic rock ", dated 10 February 1966, and theirs was the first album to use the term as part of its title, in The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, released in August that year.

In 1966, Norman Johnson published a list which included all 92 solids, and gave them their names and numbers.

Other prominent critics included the writers Heinrich Böll and Günter Grass ( in 1966, Grass had written an open letter urging Kiesinger not to accept the chancellorship ).
