In the card game contract bridge, Stayman is a convention used by a partnership to find a 4-4 or 5-3 trump fit in a suit after making a one ( 1NT ) opening bid ; it has been adapted for use after a 2NT opening, a 1NT overcall and many other natural notrump bids.
After an opening bid or an overcall of 1NT ( 2NT ), responder bids 2 ( 3 ) ( artificial ) to ask opener or overcaller to bid a four card major suit headed by a Queen minimum if he has one.
This bid promises four cards in at least one of the major suits and, in standard form, enough strength to continue bidding after partner's response ( 8 HCP for an invitational bid opposite a standard 1NT showing 15-17 HCP or 5 HCP to go to game opposite a standard 2NT showing 20-21 points ).
" Garbage " Stayman and " Crawling " Stayman are adaptations of Stayman frequently used for damage control when holding a weak hand opposite a 1NT opening bid.
Other popular Precison variations on opening bids are using a strong 1NT ( 14-16 is most common ), using 2 to show only a 6 + club suit and expanding the possible hand patterns for the 2 bid to include the usual 4-4-1-4 and 4-4-0-5 as well as 4-3-1-5 and 3-4-1-5.
Hands without an opening bid ( generally 12 + high card points ) are required to respond 1NT to 1, or to 1 if they lack 4 spades.
Conventions like Landy, DONT, Lionel and CoCa can be used to denote a two suiter over an opposing 1NT bid.
However, it is still widely used for NT contracts, thus 1NT – 2NT is invitational to bid game in 3NT
* Stayman convention – At its simplest a 2 response is used following an opening bid of 1NT to enquire whether opener has a 4-card major suit.
In standard bidding, the response of 1NT to an opening bid of 1 or 1 shows 6 to 9 high card points and is non-forcing.
Playing the forcing notrump, however, it is sometimes tactically advantageous to bid 1NT with this hand and then correct to 2 of opener's major.
If responder wishes to know further about the 1NT bid, she asks with 2.

A frequent dilemma among players is whether to allow 1NT opening with 5-3-3-2 distribution which includes a five-card major suit.
After 1NT by opener, responder starts by bidding 2 just as in the standard Stayman convention, but the opener now responds 2 or 2 only with a 5-card major.
Thus, 1NT – 2 ; 2 – 2 shows 4 spades and 1NT – 2 ; 2 – 2, shows 4 hearts.
* Conventions are specified as being " off " in response to a 1NT overcall, except that 2 is still Stayman.
Because the two-level responses are stronger than in Standard American bidding, the response of 1NT to 1 or 1 opening is forcing for one round and is used ( among other things ) for weaker hands containing low-ranking suits.
