The city and its fortified sourroundings were encircled 13 September – 16 October 1944 by the US 1st Infantry Division and 3rd Armored Division in conjunction with the US 2nd Armored Division and 30th Infantry Division during the prolonged Battle of Aachen, later reinforced by US 28th Infantry Division elements.

Ansbach was also home to the headquarters of the 1st Armored Division ( United States ) from 1972 to the early1990s.

The 1st Armored Division was sent to Georgia, and five army divisions were alerted for maximal action.

The 1st and 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry were mechanized infantry units assigned to the 3rd Armored Division ( 3AD ) in West Germany during the Cold War.

The U. S. 1st Armored Division was headquartered at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield, just off the Autobahn toward Frankfurt, until the Division completed relocation to Fort Bliss, Texas in 2011.

The Center Task Force, aimed at Oran, included the U. S. 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the U. S. 1st Infantry Division, and the U. S. 1st Armored Division — a total of 18, 500 troops.

Fort Bliss is home to the 1st Armored Division, which returned to US soil in 2011, after 40 years in Germany.

In December 1995-1996, the Vinkovci rail station served as a rail offloading base for the United States Army's 1st Armored Division in route to Županja to cross the Sava River into Bosnia during Operation Joint Endeavor.

In September 1967, Fort Hood was officially designated a two-division post with the 1st and 2d Armored Divisions.

In 1971 the colors of the 1st Cavalry Division came to Fort Hood from Vietnam, resulting in the reflagging of the 1st Armored Division, the colors of which were sent to Germany to reflag the 4th Armored Division.

The Horse Cavalry Detachment of the U. S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division is made up of active duty soldiers, still functions as an active unit, trained to approximate the weapons, tools, equipment and techniques used by the United States Cavalry in the 1880s.

The Brazilian president's honor guard is provided ( amongst other units ) by a regiment of dragoons: the 1st Guards Cavalry Regiment.
