After the retirement of the B-52D in 1982, the 22nd Bombardment Wing was renamed the 22d Air Refueling Wing and re-equipped with new KC-10A Extenders ( based on the DC-10 airliner ), making the 22nd the second Air Force unit to use the giant new tankers.
