Following the return of the 22d Bombardment Group from Korea, the wing trained for proficiency in global strategic bombardment, and in 1952, the wing took delivery of Boeing KC-97 tankers, adding aerial refueling to its mission.

During U. S. aerial bombardment of Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, the 22d Bombardment Wing deployed its planes several times and the base served as a logistical springboard for supplies and equipment en route to the Pacific.

On 10 May, the 22d Bombardment Wing was reassigned to March from Smoky Hill Air Force Base, Kansas.

Detached from the wing, the 22d Bombardment Group deployed its B-29s in early July 1950 to Kadena AB, Okinawa, where it came under control of FEAF Bomber Command ( Provisional ).

In 1954, 22d Wing aircrews flew the longest non-stop mass flight in history: from England to California.

From March to October 1967 the 22d wing was reduced to a small " rear-echelon " non-tactical organization with all tactical resources and most support resources loaned to SAC organizations involved in combat operations in Southeast Asia from U-Tapao, Thailand and Andersen AFB, Guam.

The 22d ARW was assigned to the new Air Mobility Command, and from the end of 1992 to 1994, the wing flew humanitarian airlift missions to Somalia.

The regiment left the state October 14, 1862 ; it served in the defenses of Washington in the 3rd Brigade, Abercrombie's Division, from October 16, 1862 ; in 3d, Hughston's, Brigade, Gurney's Division, Department of Virginia, at Suffolk, Virginia, from April, 1863 ; in the 1st Brigade, Gordon's Division, of 7th Corps, from May, 1863 ; of 4th Corps, from June, 1863 ; in the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 11th Corps, from July 14, 1863 ; in the 3d Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Corps, from April, 1864 ; in the 2d Brigade, Bartlett's Division, 22d Corps, from June 30, 1865 ; and, under Col. Horace Boughton, it was honorably discharged and mustered out July 20, 1865, at and near Washington, D. C.

He was a permanent delegate from Armenia to the USSR Supreme Soviet between 1950 – 1990, was a delegate of 19th, 22d and 25th Congresses of the Communist Party of the USSR ; in 1989 was elected to the USSR Congress of the People's Deputies.

Throughout 1994, various KC-135R air refueling squadrons were reassigned from other units to the 22d ARW as follows:

In October 1963 he returned to Germany, where he served as operations officer for the 22d Tactical Fighter Squadron, 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, flying F-105 Thunderchiefs at Bitburg Air Base, and from July 1964 to August 1965 as commander of the wing's 53d Tactical Fighter Squadron.

These maneuvers were executed by a task force of the Pleiku sector departing from Pleiku, two task forces of the 22d Infantry Division departing from Qui Nhơn, and a task force of two airborne battalions heliborne into northern An Khê and attacking south with Task Force Alpha of the marines brigade conducting the linkup.

These squadrons were formed from the personnel and equipment of the recently disbanded 4th and 22d Antisubmarine Squadrons at RAF Podington.

After the retirement of the B-52D in 1982, the 22nd Bombardment Wing was renamed the 22d Air Refueling Wing and re-equipped with new KC-10A Extenders ( based on the DC-10 airliner ), making the 22nd the second Air Force unit to use the giant new tankers.

During the 1990s, the 22d ARW deployed crews and aircraft to support no-fly missions over northern and southern Iraq and over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The 22d was equipped with the Boeing B-29 Superfortress.

The 1st Fighter Wing was subsequently attached to the 22d BW on 1 July as the 22d Wing's headquarters was initially non-operational and its operational components were detached so it shared a commander with the 1st Fighter Wing.

The addition of a second tanker and bomber squadron made the 22d a " Super " wing.

Lieutenant Tyndall was a World War I pilot, Silver Star recipient, and commander of the 22d Aero Squadron.

The base was taken over by the Imperial Navy Air Corps in 1942 when the 22d Imperial Naval Air Wg assumed control of the base and the mission was changed to research and development.

When MATS became MAC, WESTAF was redesignated 22d AF, with headquarters at Travis AFB, CA.
