After the 1990 – 91 Gulf War, the U. S. 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment ( 2nd ACR ) was re-equipped with Humvees and designated Armored Cavalry ( Light ), while units retaining their Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting Vehicles were classified as Armored Cavalry ( Heavy ).

In 2004 the 2nd ACR was again reequipped, this time with Stryker Armored Combat Vehicles, and renamed the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

The 1st Armored Division along with the 2nd ACR were then shifted south, because Spanish, Salvadoran, Ukrainian, and Polish forces were having increasing difficulties retaining control over Al Kut, and Najaf.

The 1st Armored Division and 2nd ACR relieved the Spaniards, Salvadoran, Poles, and put down the overt rebellion.

The main U. S. unit in the battle was the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment ( 2nd ACR ), a 4, 500 man reconnaissance and security element assigned to VII Corps.

Initial Iraqi resistance was light and scattered and the 2nd ACR fought only minor engagements until 25 February.

The 2nd ACR was to advance east, locate and engage the enemy and determine his dispositions and then allow the mechanized brigades of the 1st ID to pass through to finish destroying the Iraqis.

The Battle of 73 Easting refers narrowly to the violent armored combat action that took place in the final hours of 2nd ACR ’ s covering force operation in the zone of Second Squadron and in the northern third of the Third Squadron zone.

In the battle, four of the 2nd ACR ’ s armored cavalry troops, Troops E, G, and I with Troop K contributing to I Troop ’ s fight ( totaling about 36 M1A1 tanks ), defeated two enemy brigades, the Tawakalna Division ’ s 18th Brigade and, later in the day, the 9th Armored Brigade.

Other 2nd ACR Troops I ( call sign “ Iron ”), K (“ Killer ”), and G (“ Ghost ”) joined the fight minutes later.

Colonel Gary Bourne ’ s 210th FA Brigade in direct support of 2nd ACR fired missions out to the 78 Easting.

The 2nd ACR, which advanced between the Iraqi 12th Armored Division and the Tawakalna Division, was the only American ground unit to find itself significantly outnumbered and out-gunned.

In moving to and through the Battle of 73 Easting, 2nd ACR and the 1st Infantry division's lead brigades destroyed 160 tanks, 180 personnel carriers, 12 artillery pieces and more than 80 wheeled vehicles, along with several anti-aircraft artillery systems during the battle.

The Iron Dukes were hand picked to become part of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment ( ACR ), based out of Ft. Polk, Louisiana.

On 4 April 2004, the Iron Dukes and the 2nd ACR were called to battle the Mahdi Army for 4 more months of intense urban combat.

Shortly after the uprising, the Iron Dukes and the 2nd ACR left Baghdad and headed south to the city of Al-Kut.

After neutralizing insurgents in Al Kut, the Iron Dukes and elements of the 2nd ACR continued their fight west to the holy city of Najaf.

The Iron Dukes and the 2nd ACR would then engage in intense fighting in the cities of Najaf, Kufa and Diwaniya.

2nd ACR

The team, initially 55 strong, was duly deployed on 26 March 1990 and the first leaders cadre, for the 1st and 2nd Battalions, was run from 17 April to 2 June.

The 2nd Bombardment Squadron, U. S. Army Air Corps was reconstituted at Detrick Field between March and September 1942, when it deployed to England to become the nucleus of the new Eighth Air Force headquarters.

The 2nd Heavy BCT's two combined-arms battalions also deployed individually to Afghanistan.

From October 2006 to January 2008, the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed from Fort Carson, Colorado in support of the Multi-National Division â €“ Baghdad ( 1st Cavalry Division ) and was responsible for assisting the Iraqi forces to become self-reliant, bringing down the violence and insurgency levels and supporting the rebuilding of the Iraqi infrastructure.

The 2nd Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team deployed to Iraq in the fall of 2009.

As of March 2009, 1st Brigade, 2nd Brigade, and 3rd Brigade are deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with 4th Brigade deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

When France was invaded in May 1940, the Canadian government realized that would not be possible and mobilized three additional divisions, beginning their overseas employment in August 1940 with the dispatch of the 2nd Canadian Division ( some units of which were deployed to Iceland and Newfoundland for garrison duty before moving to the UK ).

Meanwhile, the 2nd Battalion ( formerly the 76th Regiment ) had deployed to Bermuda in 1886 for garrison duty, where they remained until 1888 when it arrived in Nova Scotia, Canada.
