* 57th Fighter Squadron, 15 May 1947 – 27 June 1949

Beginning in 1975, some 70 F-5Es were turned over to the 64th and 65th Fighter Weapons Squadrons of the 57th Tactical Fighter Wing at Nellis AFB, Nevada.

With the re-designation to a HQ USAF-controlled ( AFCON ) designation, the 57th FWW gave the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis a permanent lineage and history that the provisional TAC MAJCOM wing could not carry.

The 57th FWW absorbed and re-designated the provisional Fighter Weapons Squadrons of the 4525th FWW, providing them AFCON designations.

As part of the establishment of the Fighter Weapons School in late 1981 the 57th wing was re-designated and reorganized:

* The 422d Fighter Weapons Squadron was re-designated as the 422d Test and Evaluation Squadron on 30 December 1981, remaining under the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing.

The USAF Air Demonstration Squadron remained directly assigned to the 57th Fighter Wing.

* 57th Fighter Group USAAF

In the North African campaign, although a Flight Sergeant, he periodically led his unit, No. 260 Squadron, RAF, into battle, a function normally reserved for an officer ; in fact during one flying operation his wingman ( i. e., subordinate ) was the United States Army Air Force lieutenant-colonel commanding the U. S. 57th Fighter Group.

After attending the USAF Test Pilot School in 1983, he remained at Edwards AFB, California, as an F-16C test pilot and Chief of the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing Operating Location until his NASA selection.

The " Desert Air Task Force " consisting of American B-25 Mitchell medium bombers ( the 12th and 340th Bombardment Groups ) and P-40 Warhawk fighter planes ( the 57th, 79th, and 324th Fighter Groups ) from the 9th Air Force served under the command of Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham of the Northwest African Tactical Air Force.

When the 12th Bombardment Group ( Medium ) and the 57th Fighter Group arrived in the theater of operations, they entered a highly cooperative type of air warfare in an unfamiliar desert environment.

As the 57th Mixed Ship Aviation Division, they commanded the 830th and 38th Shipborne Anti-Submarine Helicopter Regiments and the 279th Shipborne Fighter Aviation Regiment from Severomorsk-3 in Murmansk Oblast until 1 May 1998, when it was disbanded.

His small air force was reinforced by the 57th Fighter Group ( P-40s ) and 12th Bomb Group ( B-25s ) in July and August, and Brereton drew heavily on the experiences of the RAF's Western Desert Air Force.

Consequently, 40 F-4 Phantom II fighters were sent to Israel under Nickel Grass, coming from the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, the 33d Tactical Fighter Wing and the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing.

The organizational structure of Nellis changed in the mid 1990s, with the 57th Wing being relieved from base host support duties by the 99th Air Base Wing, a re-designation of the former Strategic Air Command 99th Strategic Weapons Wing, whose origins date back to the World War II Fifteenth Air Force 99th Bombardment Group.

On January 23, 1987, following the inactivation of the 47th Air Division at Fairchild, the 92nd Bombardment Wing was reassigned to the 57th Air Division at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota.

Since February 15, 1974 the Thunderbirds have been a component of the 57th Wing at Nellis AFB.

The 57th Wing provides advanced combat training for composite strike forces, which includes every type of aircraft in the Air Force inventory.
