In terms of equipment, the GT was like the 928 SE, having more equipment than a Club Sport model but less than a 928 S4 to keep the weight down somewhat.

The S4 and GT variants were both cut at the end of 1991 model year, making way for the final version of the 928.

Externally, the S wore new front and rear spoilers and sported wider wheels and tires than the older variant, but the main change for the 928 S was under the hood, where a revised 4. 7 L engine was used.

Porsche debuted the 928 GT in the late winter 1988 / 89 after dropping the slowly selling CS and SE.

In production terms, the 924 was the first Porsche model powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine although the similarly configured 928 was designed first.

The 968's styling was an evolution on that of the outgoing 944, itself styled evolutionarily from the earlier 924, but elements were borrowed from the more expensive 928 model in an attempt to create a " family resemblance " between models, and the swooping headlamp design, inspired by those of the 959, previewed similar units found later on the Type 993 911.

These included a ' Spidervan ' ( 436 ); a suitably decorated Chevrolet van, which had also been issued the previous year as a tie-in with the American television series Charlie's Angels ( 434 ), a ' Daily Planet ' JetRanger helicopter ( 929 ) as seen in Superman: The Movie, a ' Spiderbuggy ' ( 261 ); a Jeep CJ-5 with a model of ' Spider-Man's ' arch enemy ' The Green Goblin ' trapped in a web styled plastic bag dangling from a crane fitted at the back of the vehicle, a ' Spidercopter ' ( 928 ) and a ' Spiderbike ' ( 266 ).

Believing the 928 would eventually replace the 911, Fuhrmann cut-back spending on the model, and it was not until Fuhrmann's resignation the company finally committed the financing to re-regulate the car.

Increased sales of Porsche's 928 model during the mid-1980s prompted executives to consider adding another large, sporty touring vehicle to the lineup, this time a 4-door that could serve as a more practical but equally powerful and exciting alternative to the 928.

The severe slump in 928 sales made executives re-think the viability of the idea, and low overall profits during the 1989 to 1991 model years meant the model would be far more risky for the company to build than had been anticipated during development.

Porsche updated the North American 928 S for 1985, replacing the 4. 7 L SOHC engine with a new 5. 0 L DOHC unit sporting four valves per cylinder and producing 288 hp ( 215 kW / 292 PS ).

The Avenger's wheelbase was shortened by, and some modifications were made to accommodate the small 928 cc Coventry Climax engine, a version of the unit inherited from the little Hillman Imp also made in Linwood.
