It is the home of Shaw AFB, part of the 20th Fighter Wing & Headquarters to the 9th Air Force and the Third Army as of August 2011.

The 9th Fighter Squadron of the 49th Fighter Group attached to the United States ' 5th Air Force gained the nickname " Humpty Doo Fighters " while stationed in the area in 1942.

9th Fighter Squadron

On September 10, 1942, Lt. Bong was assigned to the 9th Fighter Squadron ( aka " Flying Knights "), 49th Fighter Group, based at Darwin, Australia.

While the squadron waited for delivery of the scarce Lockheed P-38s, Bong and other 9th FS pilots flew missions with the 39th FS, 35th Fighter Group, based in Port Moresby, New Guinea, to gain combat experience.

After the war, the USAAF used the airfield for fighter defense of the Marianas ( 21st Fighter Group ), ( 549th Night Fighter Squadron ) until early 1947 and as a transport hub ( 9th Troop Carrier Squadron ).

** 9th Fighter Division

Finally, one or more of the 9th Guards Fighter Division units MAY have eventually converted to the Yak-9P before his attendance at the War College in 1948.

Subsequently assigned to the 9th and 7th Tactical Fighter Squadrons at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, Chilton served as an F-15 squadron weapons officer, instructor pilot, and flight commander until 1984 when selected for the USAF Test Pilot School.

The " Desert Air Task Force " consisting of American B-25 Mitchell medium bombers ( the 12th and 340th Bombardment Groups ) and P-40 Warhawk fighter planes ( the 57th, 79th, and 324th Fighter Groups ) from the 9th Air Force served under the command of Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham of the Northwest African Tactical Air Force.

**** 9th Fighter Squadron – Darwin

Currently the Air Force includes three Fighter Groups ( 4th, 5th and 6th ), one Attack Group ( 3rd ), one Transport Group ( 1st ) and three plain Air Groups ( 2nd, 7th and 9th ).

In 1993 these squadrons were inactivated with assets transferred to the 7th, 8th and 9th Fighter Squadrons.

On 1 July 1993, the 20th Fighter Squadron was activated as part of the 49th Operations Group, taking over the F-4Es of the 9th FS.

The 8th and 9th Fighter Squadrons deployed to Aviano Air Base, Italy and Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany from 21 February – 1 July 1999, in support of Operation Allied Force.

: The 20th Medical Group provide ambulatory medical and dental services to the 20th Fighter Wing, Headquarters 9th Air Force and associate units.

Squadrons located at Beale include: the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 99th Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Operations Support Squadron, 12th Reconnaissance Squadron, and the 489th Reconnaissance Squadron.

In 2011 the airport was ranked 9th in terms of transported passengers and aircraft operations, and 2nd in terms of cargo handled in Brazil, placing it amongst the busiest airports in the country.

The DC-130s and U-2s remained at the Davis-Monthan until 1976, when the 100 SRW was inactivated, its DC-130s transferred to Tactical Air Command's 432d Tactical Drone Group, and its U-2s transferred to SAC's 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing ( 9 SRW ) at Beale Air Force Base, California, where U-2 Dragon Lady operations were consolidated with SR-71 Blackbird operations.

The 9th Operations Group trains, organizes and equips U-2 Dragon Lady, RQ-4 Global Hawk and MC-12W Liberty combat elements for worldwide employment to include peacetime intelligence gathering, contingency operations, conventional warfighting and Emergency War Order support.

Operation Torch — the invasion of French North Africa — involving the 9th, 3rd Infantry and the 2nd Armored Divisions, initiated on November 8, 1942, was the first ground combat operations for the United States in World War II.

( Seven other U. S. Army divisions began offensive combat operations in late 1942: the 32nd and the 41st Infantry Divisions in the Pacific on New Guinea ; and in North Africa, the 9th and 3rd Infantry Divisions, and the 2nd Armored Division.

The 7th Brigade, supported by the 2nd Field Regiment, was the first to commence operations, as the 9th Battalion launched a surprise attack in the central sector of the island upon a Japanese outpost at Little George Hill on 25 November.

With 9th Brigade and the Imperial Yeomanry, Methuen ’ s Column took part in the operations of June 1900 to trap the elusive Boer leader Christiaan de Wet.

In September 1976, the U. S. U-2 operations were turned over to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, but the U-2 operation at RAF Akrotiri continued to be called Operating Location OH until September 1980.

The next significant event in Mildenhall's history came with the arrival of Detachment 4, 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing in 1976, which controlled rotational Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird operations from the base.

The inactivity of the Red Army directly in front of Warsaw elicited this reaction of amazement from Germans, recorded in the operations journal of German 9th Army on 16 August 1944: Contrary to our expectations, the enemy has halted all of their offensive actions alongside the entire front of the 9th Army.

Of the Japanese Army's ten numbered institutes, only the 9th Army Technical Research Institute came under the covert operations section of the Army General Staff's Second Bureau ( Intelligence ).

After those operations in Phuoc Long district and Phuoc Binh sub-sector, the Viet Cong 9th Division was ordered to attack Dong Xoai.

In the later two-banked (" bireme ") dromons of the 9th and 10th centuries, the two oar banks ( elasiai ) were divided by the deck, with the first oar bank was situated below, whilst the second oar bank was situated above deck ; these rowers were expected to fight alongside the ship's marines in boarding operations.

The 9th / 12th Royal Lancers completed their third tour to Iraq in December 2008 and are currently deployed on operations in Afghanistan.
