During February 1916, the Australian mounted troops of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Light Horse Brigades and the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade were placed together in the ANZAC Mounted Division.

A reorganisation of the mounted troops was ordered in February 1917 leading to the formation of the ANZAC Mounted Division ( 1st, 2nd Light Horse Brigades, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, and British 22nd Yeomanry Brigade ).

The 13th Light Horse Regiment and one squadron of the 4th Light Horse Regiment served on the Western Front, first as divisional cavalry squadrons for the 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions, and then as the I ANZAC Corps Mounted Regiment.

In combination with New Zealand mounted troops, the squadron of the 4th became part of the II ANZAC Corps Mounted Regiment.

The attack was to be made by two infantry divisions of the XX Corps, 60th ( London ) Division and the 74th ( Yeomanry ) Division and two mounted divisions of the Desert Mounted Corps, the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Division ( ANZAC Mounted Division ) and the Australian Mounted Division.

Elyne Mitchell was the daughter of General Sir Henry George ( Harry ) Chauvel, who was the commander of the ANZAC Mounted Division Light Horse and Desert Mounted Corps in World War I famous for the charge at Beersheba.

In April 1917 the division was moved to the Messines – Wytschaete Ridge section of the line in Belgium, taking up a position on the extreme right of II ANZAC Corps, with the New Zealand Division to its left.

Only Mustafa Kemal, commander of the Ottoman 19th Division at Anzac, expected the attack against the heights but he was unable to convince his superiors to significantly strengthen the defences — only one regiment was moved to the sector north of ANZAC.

In November 1917, I ANZAC ceased to exist when the Australian infantry divisions in France were grouped together as the Australian Corps and the New Zealand Division, then part of II ANZAC Corps, was allocated to a British corps.

I ANZAC Corps was initially commanded by General Alexander Godley and comprised the three " veteran " ANZAC divisions — the Australian 1st and 2nd Divisions and the newly formed New Zealand Division.

Due to the formation of a salient in the Allied lines, the area surrounding the farm, across which the Australians had to advance, was under the observation of German artillery spotters and as a result of heavy barrages I ANZAC suffered heavily during the battle, with 6, 300 casualties, 4, 649 of which were suffered by the 4th Division alone.

Of the battles, the largest, best-known, and most costly in human suffering was the Third Battle of Ypres ( 21 July to 6 November 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele ), in which the British, Canadians, ANZAC, and French forces recaptured the Passchendaele Ridge east of the city at a terrible cost of lives.

By this time the II ANZAC Corps had started to arrive in France from Egypt under the command of General Godley.

On 26 September the 4th and 5th Divisions, which had been attached to I ANZAC for the fighting around Polygon Wood carried out a successful attack in which they managed to capture both Polygon Wood and parts of Zonnebeke.

The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps ( ANZAC ) was formed in Egypt from the Australian and New Zealand infantry that had been in training prior to moving to the Western Front in France.

It also had a view straight down Monash Valley which was to become the main ANZAC base on the left.

The exact reason for the disaster was never determined but it seems that the 4th Battalion, expecting the ANZAC advance to resume at any time, had followed a movement on their left when General Bridges had instructed troops on Lone Pine to straighten their line.
