The Steelheads finished third in the WCHL North Division in 1997 – 98, but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Anchorage Aces ( now Alaska Aces ).

In the USA Hockey Senior Men's Open Tournament, the Aces finished second for the second year in a row after compiling a 4 – 1 record in the tourney, losing the tiebreaker to the Chicago Chargers.

Overall, the Aces finished in third place with a 34 – 30 – 4 record and advanced to the semifinals, only to be ousted by Tacoma in three games.

The Steelheads, along with several other WCHL-affiliated teams-namely the Alaska Aces, Bakersfield Condors, Fresno Falcons, Las Vegas Wranglers, Long Beach Ice Dogs and San Diego Gulls-became ECHL members beginning with the 2003 – 04 season.

In the 2007 – 08 playoffs, Idaho was swept in the first round by eventual champions the Alaska Aces, and in the 2008 – 09 playoffs also lost to Victoria Salmon Kings in the first round.

René Paul Fonck ( 27 March 1894 – 18 June 1953 ) was a French aviator who ended the First World War as the top Allied fighter ace, and when all succeeding aerial conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries are also considered, Fonck still holds the title of " all-time Allied Ace of Aces ".

The Penguins purchased the dormant Cornwall Aces AHL franchise from the Colorado Avalanche in 1996, but left the team inactive until the 1999 – 2000 season when it was placed in Wilkes-Barre.

During the NHL lockout that forced the cancellation of the 2004 – 05 season, Gomez returned to his native hometown of Anchorage, Alaska and played for the Alaska Aces of the ECHL.

After playing a season with the Vancouver Canucks in 1950 – 51, he joined the Quebec Aces of the Quebec Senior Hockey League.
