The project included collection and identification of all stone fragments, even small ones, from the Acropolis and its slopes and the attempt was made to restore as much as possible using reassembled original material-with new marble from Mount Penteli used sparingly.

Some of the financial accounts for the Parthenon survive and show that the largest single expense was transporting the stone from Mount Pentelicus, about 16 kilometres from Athens, to the Acropolis.

Though, according to the 4th-century BC father of botany, Theophrastus, olive trees ordinarily attained an age of about 200 years, he mentions that the very olive tree of Athena still grew on the Acropolis ; it was still to be seen there in the 2nd century AD ; and when Pausanias was shown it, ca 170 AD, he reported " Legend also says that when the Persians fired Athens the olive was burnt down, but on the very day it was burnt it grew again to the height of two cubits.

A more purely Ionic mode to be seen on the Athenian Acropolis is exemplified in the Erechtheum.

When you enter the Acropolis, the remains seen at your left side, are the foundations of Propylon ( monumental gates ) which were constructed by Eumenes II.

Anacreon was for a long time popular at Athens, where his statue was to be seen on the Acropolis, together with that of his friend Xanthippus, the father of Pericles.

On the way out Mr. Sakellariadis detoured up a special hill from which one may obtain a matchless view of the Acropolis lighted by night.

It was from tribute paid to the league that Pericles set to building the Parthenon on the Acropolis, replacing an older temple, as well as many other non-defense related expenditures.

The Areopagus, the " mount of Ares " where Paul of Tarsus preached, is sited at some distance from the Acropolis ; from archaic times it was a site of trials.

During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, many of the existing buildings in the area of the Acropolis were repaired, due to damage from age, and occasionally, war.

During the 3rd century, under threat from a Herulian invasion, repairs were made to the Acropolis walls, and the " Beulé Gate " was constructed to restrict entrance in front of the Propylaia, thus returning the Acropolis to use as a fortress.

All the valuable ancient artifacts are situated in the Acropolis Museum, which resides on the southern slope of the same rock, 280 metres from the Parthenon.

Within the later tradition of Western Civilization and classical revival the Acropolis, from at least the mid-18th century on, has often been invoked as a key symbol of the Greek legacy and of the glories of Classical Greece.

In 1806, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1799 to 1803 removed the large collection of marble sculptures from the Parthenon, on the Acropolis in Athens and transferred them to the UK.

Down the hill from the museum, visitors can wander among the Outer Kerameikos ruins, the Demosion Sema, the banks of the Eridanos where some water still flows, the remains of the Pompeion and the Dipylon Gate, and walk the first blocks of the Sacred Way towards Eleusis and of the Panethenaic Way towards the Acropolis.

" Indeed, olive suckers sprout readily from the stump, and the great age of some existing olive trees shows that it was perfectly possible that the olive tree of the Acropolis dated to the Bronze Age.

" Hephaestion " is the name of the Temple of Hephaestus overlooking the Ancient Agora of Athens, near the Acropolis, a name which hardly appears at all in Macedon at this time period.

The Ancient Agora of Athens ( aka Forum of Athens in older texts ) is the best-known example of an ancient Greek agora, located to the northwest of the Acropolis and is bounded on the south by the hill of the Areopagus and on the west by the hill known as the Colonus Agoraeus.

The neighborhoods of Plaka ( Πλάκα ), Monastiraki ( Μοναστηράκι ), Psiri ( Ψυρρή ) and Kolonaki ( Κολωνάκι ) are all within walking distance, and most of the famous sites of ancient Athens are nearby, including the Acropolis ( Ακρόπολις ), the Theater of Dionysus, the Areopagus, the Ancient Agora of Athens ( Αρχαία Αγορά των Αθηνών ) with Hadrian's Library, the Tower of the Winds in the Roman Agora, the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, the Arch of Hadrian ( Αψίς του Ανδριανού ), the Temple of Olympian Zeus ( Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός ), the Pnyx ( Πνύκα ), the Philopappos Monument ( Μνημείο του Φιλοπάππου ) on the Hill of the Nymphs, the Kerameikos Cemetery ( Νεκροταφείο Κεραμικού ), the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ( Μνημείο του Αγνώστου Στρατιώτη ) and Lycabettus Hill.

The station is right beneath the Acropolis and next to the site of the Ancient Agora of Athens.

The Acropolis was unique in the world and if that imcomparable work flooded by moonlight wasn't enough for both natives and tourists, then they were quite simply barbarians and the hell with them.

The Acropolis is located on a flat-topped rock that rises above sea level in the city of Athens, with a surface area of about 3 hectares.

Under the Latin Duchy of Athens, the Acropolis functioned as the city's administrative center, with the Parthenon as its cathedral, and the Propylaia as part of the Ducal Palace.

Then they were faced briefly with an image of a desperate family in a fallout shelter, which vanished and was replaced by a series of images reflecting the sweep of history, starting with the Acropolis and ending with an image of Marilyn Monroe ( but, again, including a mushroom cloud ).

An alternative version of the story is that, while Athena was gone bringing a mountain from Pallena to use in the Acropolis, the sisters, minus Pandrosos again, opened the box with Erichthonius inside.

Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident and a spring sprang up ; the water was salty and was not thought very useful, whereas Athena struck the rock with her lance and an olive tree sprung up.

An alternative version of the story is that Athena left the box with the daughters of Cecrops while she went to fetch a mountain from Pallene to use in the Acropolis.
