In Greek mythology, Agamemnon (; Ancient Greek: ; modern Greek:, " very steadfast ") was the son of King Atreus and Queen Aerope of Mycenae, the brother of Menelaus, the husband of Clytemnestra, and the father of Electra and Orestes.

When Helen, the wife of Menelaus, was abducted by Paris of Troy, Agamemnon commanded the united Greek armed forces in the ensuing Trojan War.

There are several reasons throughout myth for such wrath: in Aeschylus ' play Agamemnon, Artemis is angry for the young men who will die at Troy, whereas in Sophocles ' Electra, Agamemnon has slain an animal sacred to Artemis, and subsequently boasted that he was Artemis ' equal in hunting.

Classical dramatisations differ on how willing either father or daughter were to this fate, some include such trickery as claiming she was to be married to Achilles, but Agamemnon did eventually sacrifice Iphigenia.

Other sources, such as Iphigenia at Aulis, claim that Agamemnon was prepared to kill his daughter, but that Artemis accepted a deer in her place, and whisked her away to Taurus in Crimea.

Agamemnon was the commander-in-chief of the Greeks during the Trojan War.

Although not the equal of Achilles in bravery, Agamemnon was a representative of kingly authority.

When Agamemnon came home he was slain by either Aegisthus ( in the oldest versions of the story ) or Clytemnestra.

According to the accounts given by Pindar and the tragedians, Agamemnon was slain in a bath by his wife alone, a blanket of cloth or a net having first been thrown over him to prevent resistance.

In the legends of the Peloponnesus, Agamemnon was regarded as the highest type of a powerful monarch, and in Sparta he was worshipped under the title of Zeus Agamemnon.

The whole charge was sometimes said to have been an invention of Agamemnon, who wanted to have Cassandra for himself.

Achilles was absent during these encounters because of his feud with Agamemnon.

While Agamemnon, the son of Atreus, was absent on his expedition against Troy, Aegisthus seduced Clytemnestra, the wife of Agamemnon, and was so wicked as to offer up thanks to the gods for the success with which his criminal exertions were crowned.

Artemis punished Agamemnon after he killed a sacred stag in a sacred grove and boasted that he was a better hunter than the goddess.

The seer Calchas advised Agamemnon that the only way to appease Artemis was to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia.

Agamemnon once promised the goddess he would sacrifice the dearest thing to him, which was Iphigenia, but broke the promise.

While Cassandra foresaw the destruction of Troy ( she warned the Trojans about the Trojan Horse, the death of Agamemnon, and her own demise ), she was unable to do anything to forestall these tragedies since no one believed her.

In order not to be surprised by the return of Agamemnon, he sent out spies, and when Agamemnon came, Aegisthus invited him to a repast at which he had him treacherously murdered.

From Tenedos, Agamemnon sent an embassy to Priam, composed of Menelaus, Odysseus, and Palamedes, asking for Helen's return.

Menelaus, her future husband, did not attend but sent his brother, Agamemnon, to represent him.

In some versions he was sent away by Clytemnestra to avoid having him present during the murder of Agamemnon ; in others Electra herself rescued the infant Orestes and sent him away to protect him from their mother.

In the Iliad, Calchas tells the Greeks that the captive Chryseis must be returned to her father Chryses in order to get Apollo to stop the plague he has sent as a punishment: this triggered the quarrel of Achilles and Agamemnon, the main theme of the Iliad.

When he already entered adulthood, Thyestes was captured by Agamemnon and Menelaus at Delphi and brought to Atreus, who sent Aegisthus to kill him.

Chryses prayed to Apollo, and he, in order to defend the honor of his priest, sent a plague sweeping through the Greek armies, and Agamemnon was forced to give Chryseis back in order to end it.

Eustathius in his commentary on this passage relates that Cinyras promised assistance to Agamemnon, but did not keep his word: having promised to send fifty ships, he actually sent only one, while the rest were sculpted from earth, with figures of men ( also made of earth ) imitating the crew.

Morpheus was probably equated with the Dream-Spirit which Zeus sent to visit Agamemnon in the Iliad ( see Oneiroi ).

When Agamemnon was reviewing his troops he found Menestheus in the back rows seemingly avoiding action.

A similar decoration is found in the capital of the columns flanking the tomb of Agamemnon at Mycenae, but here the hypotrachelium projects forward with a cavetto moulding, and is carved with triple leaves like the buds of a rose.

Berry had rather a reputation as a fighter, though perhaps not as a master tactician, " Captain Codrington of found some wry amusement in seeing Berry in the Agamemnon blazing away for all he was worth, apparently at friend and foe alike ", notes Oliver Warner in A Portrait of Lord Nelson.

He was noted for his translations and for his challenging, unorthodox interpretations of the Greek dramatists, such as his commentary on Agamemnon ; his detractors found his readings contorted and too ingenious, too often overlooking obvious explanations in favour of the convoluted, and his published work is nowadays not highly regarded.

The Mask of Agamemnon was found on the 30th.

Some scholars, noting that the " Mask of Agamemnon " is significantly different from the others found at the site, contend that Schliemann had some of the features added to make the mask appear more heroic to viewers of his day.
