In December 1969, a rock festival took place in Altamont, California, about 30 miles ( 45 km ) east of San Francisco.

Initially billed as " Woodstock West ", its official name was The Altamont Free Concert.

The band performed at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s — Monterey ( 1967 ), Woodstock ( 1969 ) and Altamont ( 1969 )— as well as headlining the first Isle of Wight Festival.

In December, the Airplane played at the Altamont Free Concert at Altamont Speedway in California, thus becoming the only band to perform at all three of the iconic rock festivals of the 1960s: Altamont, Monterey Pop and Woodstock.
