The lament of the last Yuan emperor ( Toghun Temur Khan ), concerning the loss of Dadu and Shangdu, is recorded in many Mongolian historical chronicles such as Altan Tobchi and Asarayci neretu-yin teuke, which wrote of the city as Daidu.

Duke Jamiyan discovered and brought the original pen copy of the Altan Tobchi to Ulaanbaatar in 1926 from a Taiji ( Genghisid prince ) called Dari living in Dornod Province, Mongolia.

The Altan Tobchi is composed of three major sections that differ significantly from each other, but nonetheless woven into a whole in order to meet Luvsandanzan's purpose of providing a summary of Mongolian state ideology at that time.

The third and last section of the Altan Tobchi includes a very brief chronicle of the Yuan dynasty followed by a somewhat detailed account of the Northern Yuan dynasty till its fall with the death of Ligdan Khan in 1634.

Taken as a whole the Altan Tobchi is not a religious text, either of Tibetan Buddhism or of the well-developed shamanic Cult of Genghis Khan.

Although the near entirety of the ethical code contained in the Altan Tobchi is authentically Mongolian or nomadic and thus derives from the sayings of Genghis Khan or nomadic tradition, there are also a few quotations here and there taken from Indian ethical works and Yuan dynasty Tibetan-inspired state ideology ( i. e. the Teaching of the Two Orders, of Kublai Khan ).

For the period of Genghis Khan, his sources included the now lost Altan Debter ( Golden Book ), and historians find by comparison with material that survives in Chinese sources that he made good use of the source.

Borjigin ( plural Borjigid ;, Borjigin ;, Bordžigin ; ), Manchu: 24px Borjigit ), also known as the Altan urug (, Altan urag, Golden kin ), were the imperial clan of Genghis Khan and his successors.

Several passages of the Secret History appear in slightly different versions in the 17th century Mongolian chronicle Altan Tobchi-" The ... Golden Summary of the Principles of Statecraft as established by the Ancient Khans ".

However, the 14th Dalai Lama asserts that Altan Khan did not intend to bestow a title as such and that he intended only to translate the name " Sonam Gyatso " into Mongolian.

It has been commonly claimed that the title " Dalai Lama " was first bestowed by the Mongolian ruler Altan Khan upon Sonam Gyatso in 1578.

Altan Khan had Thegchen Chonkhor, Mongolia's first monastery, built, and a massive program of translating Tibetan texts into Mongolian was commenced.

The continuous, back-and-forth nature of the struggle, which defined this period, is captured in the Oirat epic song " The Rout of Mongolian Sholui Ubashi Khong Tayiji ," recounting the Oirat victory over the First Khan of the Altan Khanate in 1587.

Illustrative of this history is the Oirat epic song, ' The Rout of Mongolian Sholoi Ubushi Khong Tayiji ', about the war between the Oirats and the first Altan Khan of the Khalkha.

The title " Dalai Lama " itself was bestowed upon the third lama of the Gelug tulku lineage by Altan Khan ( not to be confused with the Altan Khans of the Khalkha ), and means, in Mongolian, " Ocean of Wisdom.

Altan Khan ( 1507 – 1582 ; ), whose given name was Anda ( ᠠᠨᠳᠠ in Mongolian language ), was the ruler of the Tümet Mongols and de facto ruler of the Right Wing, or western tribes, of the Mongols.

Borjigin Barsboladiin Altan was the second son of Bars Bolud Jinong, and a grandson of Batumongke Dayan Khan who had re-unified the Mongolian nobility in an attempt to regain the glory of the Yuan Dynasty.

Altan Khan, the king of the Tümed Mongols, first invited Sonam Gyatso, the head of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism ( and to be known later as the third Dalai Lama ), to Mongolia in 1569.

They met at the site of Altan Khan's new capital, Koko Khotan ( Hohhot ), and the Dalai Lama gave teachings to a huge crowd there.
