The unincorporated community of Somers is located within the town at Kenosha County Highway E ( 12th Street ) at the former Milwaukee Road ( now Canadian Pacific / Amtrak main railroad line north of Chicago ).

Originally announced in 1996, Amtrak planned to call this through service the " National Chief " with its own numbers ( 15 / 16 ), although the name and numbers were never used.

South Tracy offers the Altamont Commuter Express ( ACE ) service at Tracy ( ACE station ), which provides commuter rail transportation to the Bay Area and connects with VTA in San Jose, BART via shuttle in Dublin and Fremont, in addition to Amtrak train in Santa Clara and San Jose.

Commercial service is available 33 miles to the south in Columbia at the Columbia Regional Airport or the MO-X ( an airport shuttle to and from STL and MCI ), 60 miles to the south in Jefferson City via the Amtrak station, 45 miles to the north in La Plata via the Amtrak station, or 55 miles to the North in Kirksville at the Kirksville Regional Airport.

Scouts can then take a shuttle from the Amtrak station to Philmont.

Low demand and cost-cutting led Amtrak to drop through service to Boston between 2003 and 2008 ; passengers made a cross-platform transfer to a shuttle train.

In 2003, a problem pulled the Acela Express trainsets out of service and in an effort to find substitute rolling stock, Amtrak first curtailed the inland round trip to a 3 car shuttle between Boston and New Haven before canceling it completely.
