Andromeda is represented in the northern sky by the constellation Andromeda, which contains the Andromeda Galaxy.

In the Local Group, the Milky Way and M31 ( the Andromeda Galaxy ) are gravitationally bound, and currently approaching each other at high speed.

Such an event may have affected the Andromeda Galaxy, as it displays a multi-ring-like structure when viewed in infrared radiation.

As an example of such an interaction, the Milky Way galaxy and the nearby Andromeda Galaxy are moving toward each other at about 130 km / s, and — depending upon the lateral movements — the two may collide in about five to six billion years.

The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are the two brightest galaxies within the group ; many of the other member galaxies are dwarf companions of these two galaxies.

Andromeda is the daughter of an Aethiopian king in Greek mythology who, as divine punishment for her mother's bragging, the Boast of Cassiopeia, was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster aroused by the queen's hubris.

After he happened upon the chained Andromeda, he approached Cetus while invisible ( for he was wearing Hades's helm ), and killed the sea monster.

In 1939, Babcock reported in his PhD thesis measurements of the rotation curve for Andromeda which suggested that the mass-to-luminosity ratio increases radially.

In 2008, The Andromeda Strain was the basis for an eponymous miniseries executive-produced by Ridley and Tony Scott and Frank Darabont, and featuring Benjamin Bratt as Stone.

Reviews for The Andromeda Strain were overwhelmingly positive, and the novel was an American Bestseller, establishing Michael Crichton as a respected novelist and science-fiction writer.
