The " Anthon Transcript " ( also known as the " Caractors " document ) is a small piece of paper on which Joseph Smith, Jr. is said to have transcribed reformed Egyptian characters from the golden plates ( the ancient record from which Smith claimed to have translated the Book of Mormon ).

During the early 1980s, forger Mark Hofmann sold alleged Mormon materials to Mormon investors and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including a sample of reformed Egyptian characters probably copied from the Caractors Transcript in a manner intended to make them more closely agree with the description given by Anthon.

The LDS Church announced the discovery of the Anthon Transcript in April and purchased it from Hofmann for more than USD $ 20, 000.

In 1980, Mark Hofmann created and sold a forgery of the Anthon Transcript to leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was revealed to be fraudulent when Hofmann's crimes were investigated.

The Community of Christ possesses the handwritten slip of paper known as the Anthon Transcript.

: Your letter of yesterday is received & I hasten to answer as fully as I can -- Joseph Smith Jr first come to my notice in the year 1824 in the summer of that year I contracted with his father to build a fence on my property in the corse of that work I approach Joseph & ask how it is in a half day you put up what requires your father & 2 brothers a full day working together he says I have not been with out assistance but can not say more only you better find out the next day I take the older Smith by the arm & he says Joseph can see any thing he wishes by looking at a stone Joseph often sees Spirits here with great kettles of coin money it was Spirits who brought up rock because Joseph made no attempt on their money I latter dream I converse with spirits which let me count their money when I awake I have in my hand a dollar coin which I take for a sign Joseph describes what I seen in every particular says he the spirits are grieved so I through back the dollar in the fall of the year 1827 I hear Joseph found a gold bible I take Joseph aside & he says it is true I found it 4 years ago with my stone but only just got it because of the enchantment the old spirit come to me 3 times in the same dream & says dig up the gold but when I take it up the next morning the spirit transfigured himself from a white salamander in the bottom of the hole & struck me 3 times & held the treasure & would not let me have it because I lay it down to cover over the hole when the spirit says do not lay it down Joseph says when can I have it the spirit says one year from to day if you obay me look to the stone after a few days he looks the spirit says bring your brother Alvin Joseph says he is dead shall I bring what remains but the spirit is gone Joseph goes to get the gold bible but the spirit says you did not bring your brother you can not have it look to the stone Joseph looks but can not see who to bring the spirit says I tricked you again look to the stone Joseph looks & sees his wife on the 22d day of Sept 1827 they get the gold bible -- I give Joseph $ 50 to move him down to Pa Joseph says when you visit me I will give you a sign he gives me some hiroglyphics I take then to Utica Albany & New York in the last place Dr Mitchel gives me an introduction to Professor Anthon says he they are short hand Egyption the same what was used in ancient times bring me the old book & I will translate says I it is made of precious gold & is sealed from view says he I can not read a sealed book -- Joseph found some giant silver specticles with the plates he puts them in an old hat & in the darkness reads the words & in this way it is all translated & written down -- about the middle of June 1829 Joseph takes me together with Oliver Cowdery & David Whitmer to have a view of the plates our names are appended to the book of Mormon which I had printed with my own money -- space and time both prevent me from writing more at present if there is any thing further you wish to inquire I shall attend to it

Romantic friendships were also popular in the U. S. Enigmatic poet Emily Dickinson wrote over 300 letters and poems to Susan Gilbert, who later became her sister-in-law, and engaged in another romantic correspondence with Kate Scott Anthon.

He prophesies the conversation that Martin Harris has with Professor Charles Anthon.

Thomas may be referring to John Anthon ’ s An Analytical Abridgment of the Commentaries of Sir William Blackstone on the laws of England: in four books: together with an analytical synopsis of each book, printed and published by Isaac Riley in 1809, second edition 1832.

Harris took this document to New York City, where he met with Charles Anthon, a professor of linguistics at Columbia College.

Charles Anthon is famous among members of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( also known as Mormons ) because of his interactions with Martin Harris concerning a fragment of Joseph Smith's translation of the Book of Mormon.

Dr. Anthon was a friend and correspondent of Edgar Allan Poe, who attempted to use the acquaintance with him to gain a national reputation in literature and journalism as well as publication in 1845 of Poe's collected stories through Harper and Brothers.

The document seemed to be the transcript that Joseph Smith's scribe Martin Harris had presented to Charles Anthon, a Columbia classics professor, in 1828.

" Anthon gave a second account in 1841 that contradicted his 1834 account as to whether or not he gave Harris a written opinion about the document: " requested me to give him my opinion in writing about the paper which he had shown to me.

David Whitmer, who once owned the document, stated that it was this slip of paper that Martin Harris showed to Charles Anthon, as noted above.

Both Mormon apologists and critics, however, claim that it is not certain that the document is the original, since Anthon had mentioned that the characters on the slip he saw were arranged in vertical columns and ended in a " rude delineation of a circle divided into various compartments, decked with various strange marks, and evidently copied after the Aztec calendar given by Humboldt ," ( 1834 ) or " a rude representation of the Mexican zodiac " ( 1841 ).

( Apostle Anthon Lund also did not sign the document due to his absence while presiding over the church's European Mission.

Anthon is a city in Woodbury County in the U. S. state of Iowa.

In 1834, Anthon stated that, " The whole story about my having pronounced the Mormonite inscription to be ' reformed Egyptian hieroglyphics ' is perfectly false ... I soon came to the conclusion that it was all a trick, perhaps a hoax ... requested an opinion from me in writing, which of course I declined giving.

Since 2007 it is owned by the company Anthon B Nilsen.

Alan Cameron ( born 1938 ) is a British classicist, Charles Anthon Professor of the Latin Language and Literature at Columbia University.

Because Harris desired assurance of the work's authenticity, Smith transcribed characters from the plates to a piece of paper, perhaps the one now known as the Anthon transcript.
