The city is sied on the lower slopes of the Taragarh Hill in the Aravalli Range.

The clouds which strike Kathiawar and Kutch are deprived of a great deal of their moisture by the hills in those countries ( now the majority of this region is in Gujarat state within independent India ), and the greater part of the remainder is deposited on Mount Abu and the higher slopes of the Aravalli Range, leaving but little for Merwara, where the hills are lower, and still less for Ajmer.

The district is located in the Northeast of Gujarat and is presumably named after the West Banas River which runs through the valley between Mount Abu and Aravalli Range, entering into the plains of Gujarat in this region and flowing towards the Rann of Kutch.

Palaeo-drainage network formed by several palaeochannels has been worked out by different researchers in western Rajasthan and neighbouring states, which is mainly buried under sand cover of the Thar Desert and parallel to the Aravalli Hills 6 – 8.

Rising in the western Aravalli Range in the state of Rajasthan, where it is known as the Sagarmati, it flows south-west and enters a patch of desert before dissipating into the Rann of Kutch, traversing a total of 530 km.

Pushkar Lake around which the Pushkar town has developed is in the Ajmer district in the state of Rajasthan, India amidst the Aravalli range of hills.

The species also extends into the Aravalli range of northwestern India.

The populations in three distribution ranges have been designated as subspecies ; caurina for the populations in the Aravalli range, the south Kerala population stewarti and the nominate population of the rest of India.

In the dry sector west of the dry line, clear skies are the rule due to the dryness of the air mass sweeping off the Rocky mountains in North America, and the Aravalli range in India.

The area to the north and west of the range are arid and inhospitable, located in the shadow of both the Vindhya and the higher Aravalli range to the south blocking the prevailing winds.

The Aravalli range are the oldest fold mountains in India. The northern end of the range continues as isolated hills and rocky ridges into Haryana state, ending in Delhi.
