In 1911, the town was served by five railroad lines: Alabama Great Southern ( Queen & Crescent route ), the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, the Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham ( St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad system ), the Birmingham Southern Railroad, and the Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic railways.

When the railroad company was unable to cover the interest owed bondholders, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad covered the shortfalls until 1885, and then foreclosed, merging the route into their system as the L & N's Pensacola and Atlantic Division.

The originator of the Seaboard System was the former Seaboard Air Line Railroad, which previously merged Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and later Louisville and Nashville Railroad, as well as several smaller subsidiaries.

The Clinchfield Railroad began operating the line December 1, 1924, and for many years it was leased jointly by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and Louisville and Nashville Railroad.

The SDP35 wound up going to four railroads: SAL ( 20, numbered 1100-1119 ), Atlantic Coast Line ( 1, numbered 550 ), Louisville and Nashville ( 4, numbered 1700-1703 ) and Union Pacific ( 10, numbered 1400-1409 ).
