The oldest remaining house in Los Angeles is the Avila Adobe located on Olvera Street ( built in 1818 ).

There are 27 historic buildings lining Olvera Street, including the Avila Adobe, the Pelanconi House and the Sepulveda House.

It was within this social and political climate that Christine Sterling began her public campaign to " save " the old Francisco Avila Adobe from demolition and build up Olvera Street as a Disneyland-like center of Mexican romance and tourism.

Sterling's efforts to rescue the Plaza-Olvera area began in 1926, when she discovered the deteriorated conditions of the area, and in particular the Avila Adobe, the oldest existing home in the city.

After raising the issue of the Avila Adobe with the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Sterling approached Harry Chandler, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times with a plan to restore the building and create a colorful Mexican marketplace and cultural center in the Plaza.

In late November of that year, Sterling found a Los Angeles City Health Department Notice of Condemnation posted in front of the Avila Adobe.

The Avila Adobe, was built in 1818 by Francisco Avila, and has the distinction of being the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles, California.

The Avila Adobe was one of the settlement's first houses to share street frontage in the Pueblo de Los Angeles of Spanish colonial Alta California.

The walls of the Avila Adobe are thick and are built from sun baked adobe bricks.

The nearby Zanja Madre, literally Mother Ditch, was a main water aqueduct and irrigation ditch which brought water down to the Pueblo from the Los Angeles River, and was close enough to the Adobe for Francisco Avila to avail himself.

The Avila Adobe was considered gracious in its day.

Sterling then went to the papers and called in reporters to cover a story on the restoration of Olvera Street and the Avila Adobe.

Eventually the Avila Adobe was completely restored to its former glory.

In 1953 the State of California acquired the Avila Adobe as part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park.

The Avila Adobe is opened for public touring and is located at East 10 Olvera Street within El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park.
