Their former range was from Mount Gara Muleta in the east to Shashamene and the northern Bale Zone to the south ; currently, the main area of distribution is the Bale Mountains National Park.

The largest population is found in the Bale Mountains in southern Ethiopia, and there are smaller populations in the Semien Mountains in the north of the country, and in a few other areas.

A rabies outbreak in 1990 reduced the largest known population, found in the Bale Mountains National Park, from about 440 wolves to less than 160 in only two weeks.

In the southern part of its range it comes into contact with the closely related vervet monkey ( C. pygerythrus ) and Bale Mountains vervet ( C. djamdjamensis ).

Hybridization between them is possible, and may present a threat to the vulnerable Bale Mountains Vervet.

Bale Mountains

The Bale Mountains ( also known as the Urgoma Mountains ) are a range of mountains in the Oromia Region of southeast Ethiopia, south of the Awash River.

The Bale Mountains National Park covers 2, 200 square kilometers of these mountains.

The Bale Mountains are home to many of Ethiopia's endemic animals, notably the Ethiopian Wolf, ( Canis simensis ), found on the Sanetti Plateau.

Nominated in 2009 to the World Heritage Tentative List, Bale Mountains National Park ( BMNP ) is a national park in Ethiopia with one of the highest incidences of animal endemicity of any terrestrial habitat in the world.

The Bale Mountains National Park is located in southeastern Ethiopia, 400 km southeast of Addis Ababa and 150 km east of Shashamene in the Oromia Regional National State.

The Bale Mountains were formed prior to the formation of the Rift Valley from lava outpourings, which covered all underlying rock formations between 38 and seven million years ago.

During the last ice age, the Bale Mountains were one of the most extensively glaciated areas in Ethiopia with a total area of ice in Bale of approximately 180 km2.
