Benicia is a Tree City USA Tree City USA and holds an annual Arbor Day Event.

In additional to individual sailing out of the Benicia Marina, there are several organized events and competitions.

In California's Contra Costa County and Solano County, a shoreline necklace of refineries, built in the early 20th century before this area was populated, and associated chemical plants are adjacent to urban areas in Richmond, Martinez, Pacheco, Concord, Pittsburg, Vallejo and Benicia, with occasional accidental events that require " shelter in place " orders to the adjacent populations.

On July 4, there is a large community picnic at Benicia ’ s City Park traditionally starting at noon.

Every fourth Sunday in July, the Portuguese community in Benicia celebrates the feast of the Holy Ghost, commemorating the Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal, with a parade to Saint Dominic's Church followed by mass, an auction and a dance.

The City of Benicia was founded on May 19, 1847, by Dr. Robert Semple, and Thomas O. Larkin and Comandante General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, on land sold to them by General Vallejo in December 1846.

It was named for the General's wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo.

In his memoirs, William Tecumseh Sherman contended that Benicia was " the best natural site for a commercial city " in the region.

In 1997, Bowling Green became a Tree City USA, sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Hemet has been named a Tree City USA for 20 years by the Arbor Day Foundation for its dedication to the local forest.

Since 1995, Inverness has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the US Forestry Service.

Popularly known as " Redbud City " because of the many redbud trees that have historically lined city streets and the major approaches to the city, Buchanan has long been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

In 1993, Rice was named a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Foundation.

The City of Herculaneum has received the Tree City USA designation by the Arbor Day Foundation for the past three years-2007, 2008 and 2009.

Swedesboro has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA since 2000.

Houston and the Mitchell County Development Foundation have recently undertaken promoting Spruce Pine as being the " Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree ," taken from Houston's work " The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree.

Amberley was designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

The National Arbor Day Foundation has qualified Ada as a Tree City USA.
