Many blame the failure of Biosphere 2 on an improper balance of microbes.

The term and metaphor were first used by E. F. Schumacher in his book Small Is Beautiful and are closely identified with Herman Daly, Robert Costanza, the Biosphere 2 project, and the Natural Capitalism economic model of Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins, and Hunter Lovins until recently, when it began to be used by politicians, notably Ralph Nader, Paul Martin Jr., and agencies of the UK government including the London Health Observatory.

Small artificial closed ecosystems, including Biosphere 2, have been built in an attempt to work out the engineering difficulties in such a system, with mixed results.

The community is the location of the Biosphere 2 experiment.

Biosphere 2 is an Earth systems science research facility currently owned by the University of Arizona since 2011.

Biosphere 2 sits on a sprawling 40-acre science campus that is open to the public.

Biosphere 2 contained representative biomes: a 1, 900 square meter rainforest, an 850 square meter ocean with a coral reef, a 450 square meter mangrove wetlands, a 1, 300 square meter savannah grassland, a 1, 400 square meter fog desert, a 2, 500 square meter agricultural system, a human habitat, and a below-ground level technical infrastructure.

Heating and cooling water circulated through independent piping systems and passive solar input through the glass space frame panels covering most of the facility, and electrical power was supplied into Biosphere 2 from an onsite natural gas energy center through airtight penetrations.

Biosphere 2 had two closure experiments, Missions 1 and 2, during which the structure was sealed with researchers living inside.

On June 26, 2007, the University of Arizona announced it would take over research at the Biosphere 2.

In June 2011, the University announced that it would assume full ownership of Biosphere 2, effective July 1.

Prior to the first closure experiment in Biosphere 2, initial tests were carried out in a smaller, 480 cubic meter onsite facility ( the " Test Module "), looking at potable water generation, atmospheric sealing, atmospheric expansion and contraction, and the behavior of life systems inside a closed ecological system.

The agricultural area of Biosphere 2 was planted over a year before closure, and biospherians managed their farm, growing and processing food, so that there would be a supply of food grown inside when the full closure began.

Biosphere 2 suffered from CO < sub > 2 </ sub > levels that " fluctuated wildly " and most of the vertebrate species and all of the pollinating insects died.

Galagos reproduced in Biosphere 2, but a number of pollinating insects were lost to ant predation and several bird species were lost.

* Programme on Man and the Biosphere, a project of UNESCO

He led a team of Indian scientists to the Soviet Union for conducting jointly a research project in 1963 and represented India in the UNESCO programme on Man and Biosphere ( MAB ) at Oslo, Norway.

In the Biosphere series of paintings, Rockman alludes to the Biosphere 2 project in Arizona and envisions a situation where the Earth has become too toxic for human life, so life only exists in strangely mutated forms inside geodesic-dome structures.

It is a structure originally built to be an artificial, materially closed ecological system in Oracle, Arizona ( US ) by Space Biosphere Ventures, a joint venture whose principal officers were John P. Allen, inventor and Executive Director, and Margret Augustine, CEO.

Natural LSS like the Biosphere 2 in Arizona have been tested for future space travel or colonization.

* Dr. Ed Glenn at the Environmental Research Lab, University of Arizona, studied the biointensive method when considering food production methods for the Biosphere II experiment.

As this area has had very limited use for agriculture, habitats remain largely undisturbed while parts of the desert are protected areas including Mamungari Conservation Park ( formerly known as Unnamed Conservation Park ) in South Australia, a large area of pristine arid zone wilderness which possesses cultural significance and is one of the fourteen World Biosphere Reserves in Australia.

It is the largest national park in the lower 48 states and has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve.

The grove covers an area of 301 ha and has been affiliated with the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve since 1931.

In order for an area to be included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, work on the ground has to have started, appropriate information about the region gathered, and the local population needs to have agreed.

The area was designated a Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 1973 and has some of the most diverse coral reef diving in Asia.

The UNESCO has declared this area a Biosphere Reserve in 1996, in particular for the protection of otters.
