Aris's Birmingham Gazette, founded in 1741, became " one of the most lucrative and important provincial papers " of 18th century England, and by the 1770s circulated as far afield as Chester, Sheffield and London.

In November 1753, in Aris's Birmingham Gazette, the following advertisement appeared:

After graduating he worked briefly as a reporter for the Birmingham Gazette, Picture Post and Sunday Graphic newspapers and then as a film director for the BBC's Tonight programme.

He later joined the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, where he worked on both the sporting and theatrical fronts, then the Birmingham Gazette as a sub-editor.

He became known as a football celebrity, writing a weekly column for the Birmingham Gazette and endorsing products such as footballs, and a type of football boot which the manufacturer billed as the " McGregor lace-to-toe boot ".

This was a cumulation of notes he had published earlier in the Birmingham Gazette.

On 25 August 1946 the Blue Angels switched to the Grumman F8F Bearcat | F8F-1 Bearcat and in 1947 introduced the famous " diamond " formation at the World Air Carnival in Birmingham, Alabama | Birmingham, Alabama.

Lineker scored three hat-tricks for Everton ; at home to Birmingham City in a 4 – 1 league win on 31 August 1985, at home to Manchester City in a 4 – 0 home win on 11 February 1986, and then in the penultimate league game of the season on 3 May 1986, when they kept their title hopes alive with a 6 – 1 home win over Southampton.

* August 5 – Eric Clapton provokes an uproar over comments he makes on stage at a Birmingham concert, voicing his opposition to immigration using multiple racial slurs while exhorting the audience to support Enoch Powell and to " keep Britain white ".

These continued to occur at local venues, with the exception of gigs in Chesterfield, Birmingham and, in August, their first appearance in London.

* August 27 — Sir Arthur Sullivan's oratorio The Light of the World ( inspired by William Holman Hunt's painting of the same name ) is premièred at the Birmingham Festival.

First to arrive was the line built by the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway ( B & DJR ) from Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire ( on the London and Birmingham Railway ) to Derby, which opened on 12 August 1839.

An Act of Parliament received the Royal Assent on 30 April 1792, entitled " An Act for making and maintaining a navigable Canal from, or from near, Wyrley Bank, in the county of Stafford, to communicate with the Birmingham and Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, at or near the town of Wolverhampton, in the said county ; and also certain collateral Cuts therein described from the said intended Canal ".

The canal was lock-free from the Birmingham Canal mainline at Horseley Fields Junction for 16. 5 miles ( 26. 5 kilometres ), after which there were 30 locks descending to Huddlesford over a further 7 miles ( 11. 3 kilometres ).

He was buried on 30 September, just nine days after the completion of his Birmingham Canal, at St. James in Newchapel in Staffordshire, England.

In 1831 an advertisement of the four-horse coach from Nottingham to Birmingham states that the coach called at Beeston daily at 8. 30 am, and in the opposite direction at 3. 30 pm.
