The most sophisticated version of this formalism was the so-called Sommerfeld – Wilson – Ishiwara quantization.
He is known for his theory of the chemical bond ( ionic bond / octet rule ), the Sommerfeld – Kossel displacement law, and other achievements.
The more important role of the Fowler-Nordheim paper was that it was a convincing argument from experiment that Fermi – Dirac statistics applied to the behavior of electrons in metals, as suggested by Sommerfeld in 1927.
